Thanks to moving spirits like lawyer Duncan McIn- tyre and other history orien- ted citizens such as Mrs. H.B. Muckle, Guy Winter, Dick Valleau and Mrs. R.D. Ruddy - a provincial charter for the society was secured and they were a going con- cern dedicated to heritage preservation in the Whitby area. Since then, the society has continued to serve the public by operating the Whitby Museum at Lynde House and the Archives located in the Centennial Building on Centre Street. Through an on-going program of acquisitions the Lynde House Museum at Dundas and DeHillier Streets has become well known throughout the province for the quality of its exhibits, the rooms featuring i9th century fur- niture in paricular. Much of this success is due to the dedication and hard work of curator Fred Cane. The Ar- chives have been under the care of Brian Winter for many years. Newly elected president of the Whitby Historical Society, Sheila Cormack, says "My predecessors in office did an excellent job of building Whitby's heritage facilities by continuaily upgrading the collections in the Museum and Archives - people like Margaret Ken- nedy and Florence Heard did a fine job for the people of Whitby - I hope to continue improving both the Museum and the Archives." Sheil Cormack looks upon the Museum and Archives as an integral part of the educational system in this region, serving particuiarly those of student age with an interest in local history. In this connection there has been a rising number of student groups visit the Museum with their teacher in recent years.
