New Horizons is a federal governifent grants program t.ffering contributions to groups of retired people to create projects and under- take activities for the benefit of themselves and others in the communities in which they live. Those to receive the latest grants include: The Windsor Place Association, Whitby, $5,878, to expand the program of activities for the residents of a senior citizens building; and the Sun- nycrest Residents, Whitby, $7,020, to develop its prograni of recreational ac- tivities. The group will also produce a monthly newslet- ter. Baby Contest The Whitby Jaycettes are sponsoring a Spring Baby Photo Contest, as a ways project for their organization. Only the first 50 snapshots, 3" x 5", one child per photo, will be ac- cepted. Babies under three years old by December 31, 1979 are eligible for entry. E-ntry forms can be picked up at Whitby and Brooklin banks and Manchester Credit Union in Whitby and Brooklin. Closing date* for entries is April 11. MIPP LA> (PC-DU RHAM WEST) Government gets into inor hockey With its longstanding and widespread appeal, minor hockey has become a legacy shared by youngsters in communities across our province. The popularity of the sport is reflected in the 250,000 minor hockey players in Ontario who par- ticipate in 16,600 organized teams in more than 1,000 arenas. A great number of these players, teamns and arenas are located right here in Durham West Riding. In recent years, there has developed a cumulative awareness of the need to review both our attitudes and approach to the game of nockey, particularly as a sport for children. This year, the Ontario Hockey Council released its, 107 page report which in- cluded 119 recommen- dations on how the sport might be improved. The bot- tomline of the report is a concensus of the clear need for change in the attitude of every individual involved in minor hockey, be they a player, coach, referee, volunteer organizer, spec- tator or parent. The studS' also underlined the need for training programs emphasizing basic hockey skitls such as skating, passing and shooting, while it stressed the importance of developing the leadership abilities of coaches, referees and volunteers. Other issues examined were parent behaviour at games, money and time spent on hockey and violen- ce in the game. It is clear that if we are to implement a change in minor hockey, that change must be preceded by definitive action. Accor- dingly, the Provincial Government has responded with two significant measures. The initial step is to recon- stitute the Ontario Hockey Council, a coordinating group for regional and local hockey associations which was originally established by Cabinet Order. The Council will be transformed into a non-profit organization with members nominated by both the On- tario Government and the Ontario hockey associations. Through an independent body, the public at large and organized hockey will be able to combine efforts to shape the future path of minor hockey in our com- munity. To begin this move toward more positive development programs, the Council will receive provincial funding of up to $2 million over the next three years. 0f this amount, $100,000 will provide base funding for the Council with up to $1.1 million to be made available from lottery profits. in the final analysis, the key to success in minor hockey lies in encouraging an environment where young players may properly develop fundamental skîlls while sharing the cooperation, goodwill, teamn spirit and good, old fashioned fun that have traditionally marked Canada's national sport.
