PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY MARCH 26, 1980, WFITBY FREE PRESS Letters... December 14, 1979. Representatives from the Mlnistry of Com- munity and Social Ser- vicesý, Durham Chiidren's Aid Society and the Region of Durham were in atten- dance. In its report to the Minis ter of the Review Comrnittee made the following findings and 1 quote: 1. "That the Society in preparing its estimactes of expenditures had done s0 in a most responsibie and diligent manner. The restraint in spending requested by the Ministry of ail Societies in Ontario was ap- Cont. from page 4. parent, ln detailed study of the budget cf the Durham Society for 1979."1 2. "That by the consent of both the Society and the Ministry the soie issue requiring recommendation by the Review Committee was whether or not the Society should be per- ifijtion mitted an increase 0f $1 9,300 over and above the allowable 5%/oin Salaries and benefits Item of estimates of expenditures." (it should be pointed out that ln 1979 the staff of the Children's Aid Society of Durham was budgeted for ai% io n- crease to keep comn- petitive with other Societies nearby. This difference 0f $19,300 then, represents the extra 2%/ over what the Ministry suggested.) 3. "That failure to corn- ply with the Society's request for the ad- ditional $19,300 could aggravate an already difficuit salary and morale probiem the Society faces with its employees. The resuit could lead to a deterioration of man- datory services detrimental to the public in the area ser- ved by the Soc iety." The Committee went on to recommend to the Minister that he allow the increase of $19,300 requested by the Children's Aid Society. Afte~r studying the report by his Review Committee, the Minister decided not to accept the recommen- dation of the Commit- tee. Is democracy stili working ln the Province of Ontario? Respectfully, E.W. Morrison, Board Member, Durham Region Children's Aid Soc iety.
