Evans wants snowmobie ban By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff One Whitby councillor wants snowmobiles banned from town owned roads. Centre Ward Councillor Barry Evans introduced a notice of notion that would pass a bylaw prohibiting the use of ail snowmiobiles on town owned roads. Evans said that the move was prompted by the aic- cident last Saturday when a young Whitby girl was killed after being struck by a snowmobile. In a later interview, Evans said, "Although there was a fatality, I didn't want my fellow councillors to make a decision ini the heat Qf the moment." lie said that he wanted the other members of council to make a rational decision based on the facts and merits of the proposai, not under the emotional stress of being faced with a death. Evans said that it was brought to his attention that the town has the authorîty to pass such a bylaw, although no such bylaw is presently on the books. He admitted, however, that "the accident drew the entire situation to my atten- tion." Evans said that a town the size of Whitby should not allow snowmobiles on the road as they are a traf fie hazard. -"1 don't think that Whitby should have snowmobiles on the road, " he said.- As a notice of motion, the matter will corne up again at the next meeting of counc il.- BARRY EVANS
