WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY MARCH 5, 1980, PAGE 19 Ten Whitbyiùes receive Red Cross awards special certificates froit the Ontario Red Cross wiLl be presented to three volun- teers for at least five yfars service at Blood [)'onor Clinica. Mrs. Marjorie Gar- tsbore and Mrs. Evelynl Safety precautionas for your fireplace or wood stove By CAPT. KEN CORNER Whitby Fire Department With t.hegreat amount of concern these days in reguard to the conserving of energy, more and more people are turniing to wood burning appliances. With the increased installatiion of these appliances, along with the possible misuse or improper installation, the number of responses of the Fire Departnenit to attend chimney fires have increased greatly. It is with this in mind that the Witby Fire Departinent would like to pass on the following precautions to Ixtalken if your home has a fireplace or wood burning appliance. - Make sure there is a suitable f ire extinguisher near a t hand to keep the family safe while saving on gas or oil and en- joying the crackling fire. - Before lighting the fire, be sure the damper is open and do not close it too soon after the fire has died out. -Be sure there is enough air circulation to keep the fireaplace from smoking. Neyer leave children unattended at a fireplace and always use a fireplace screen. - DO NOT overload the fireplace. It could radiate einough heat to ignite nearby combustibles. - If you use artificial logs in your fireplace, burn only <mne at a time and NEYER poke such a log while it is buirning. These logs contain a flammable wax that could stick to the poker and drop onto the floor or carpet, or the wax-fed flame may flare up intensely if the artificial log is poked. - Inspect the cbimney and flue pipes regularly to însure there is no build-up of creosote on the inside area. If ex- cessive build-up is noticed, have the chimney ecpertly clea'ned. The increase in the use of wood bas placed a great denund on the suppliers. It is therefore, natural that aIl the wood being used today is either a poor burning wood or has not been properly aged. Witb this in mmnd, we would suggest that al wood appliance owners obt.ain literature whicb rmay be available at the library or your wood and stove suppliers. This literature will inform you on the proper use of your appliance and what woods are the best for a safe and proper use wîth the greatest output of heat. In summing up this article, we wish to remind you that a wood buring appliance, used properly, gives you both a arrn and cozy home and helps in the ongoing battle to conserve energy. However, the misuse or improper burning habi ts of a wood burning appliance could cause severe damnage to your home and possibly injury to the occupants.
