I --------------------- ----------------------------------------- Ways to wealth By THE REV. EMMO J. OLTMANN Emmanuei Reformned Church Whitby I'm sure most peopie would like to know six easy steps to become rich. The probiem in our materialistic society is that we equate riches with money and material possessions. Many people think of security as a relief from financial strain that only weaith can bring. However, Jesus spoke of the deceit- fuinesof riches. Material riches can be deceitful when it causes a person to feel self sufficient apart from God. In the l2th chapter of Luke, Jesus tells the story of a rich man who felt secure in his weaith. Af ter looking over al of his financial holdings, he said to himseif , 1"You have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, 'F001! This night your soul is required of you. " (Luke 9:19-20) God does not eall many people fools, but he called this man a foo1. That might the rich man died. From the world's point of view he was probabiy a big success. But how pathetic is his life when viewed from the other side of eternity. The rich man in that story in Luke 12 thought he did not need God, he didn't need prayer because he feit self-sufficient in his wealth. He deceived himself because he didn't consider the possibility of death and the judgement of God. Christ asks piainiy, "What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whoie world, and lose his own soul?" (Mark 8:36) There are many people who believe and live as though prosperity and a high standard of living are the greatest goals that anyone can attain. Yet the Bible clearly teaches that anything that keeps a person apart from God will destroy that person. There is nothing in the entire Bible that wouid teach that it is inherently sinful to have material riches. The bible speaks about our motives, our thoughts, our priorities, our intentions. It is not money, but "the love of money that is the root of al evil. " (I Timothy 6: 10) God says that our main concern should be to have riches in heaven. "Don't store up treasures here on earth where they can erode away or may be stoien. Store them in heaven where they will neyer lose their value, and are safe frorn thieves. If your profits are in heaven, your heart will be there too. " (Mat- thew 6: 19-21, Living Bible). In, those words, Jesus tells us to concentrate on things that have permanent value. We begin storing up treasures in heaven when, by an act of faith, we ask Jesus Christ to be Lord and Saviour of our lives. We should always evaluate the thing of this life from the perspective of eternity. This world is not the end of life, it is a stage on the way; therefore, our eyes should be fixed on the goal beyond. Any person who has a living reiationship with God through per- sonal faith in Jesus Christ is rich, regardless of how much or how little of this world's materiai possessions you have. EASTER IS NOT CH RISTIAN! THE GOOD FRIDAY EASTER SUNDAY TRADITION WAS OBSERVED LONG BEFORE CHRIST BY THE PAGAN SUN-WORSHIPPING NATIONS.
