PAGE 12, WEDNESL)AY, FEBRUARY 6, 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS Grits, Tories inactive on energy -mRison The otd-line, old-time poitical parties have been inactive in achieving any good energy poticies accor- ding to Onario Riding NDP candidate Geof f Rison. "When it comes to energy policy, the Canadian gover- nment bas exhibited cotiosal stupidity," he said. Rison attacked both the last governrnent of Conser- vative Prime Minister and that of the former Prime Mînister Pierre Trudeau claiming that "their inaction is criminal, both parties have ignored Canada's energy needs. " "At present, eastern Canada is importing expen- sive OPEC oit," Rison told a group of supporters of the weekend. "Yet Canada has a surplus of natural gas. One one hand, we hear warnings of oit shortages white on the other hand we hear announ- cements of more natural gas sales to the United States." Rison also accused the government of havîng the "6asteep at the switch syn- drome" and cited recent profit statements by lm- periat Oit that showed a record $471 million. ",Yet, the dozing Ottawa governments still give ex- ploration grants, tax credits, tax deferments and incen- tives to an obscenety weatthy coporation. "Gone are the days," he continued, "«when com- panies took their own risks. Gone are the days when free enterprise stood on its own - without being underwritten by governuments." The Dunbarton High Sehool geography teacher said that the defeated Tory budget increased oit and gasotine prices 'lin order to shift the money around" and was "off target and inef- fecitve." The NDP, he said, would tike to see any gas and oit price increase give PetroCan an expanded rote in exploration and marketing. "The December budget guaranteed the oul com- panies another $33 bilion," Rison said. "Right out of our pockets." Rison said that the coun- try would be in for "more of the same" if the Tories or the Grits are returned to power February 18. iOpenm g February 8 marks the day of the opening of the new Saints Rolter Skating Centre in Whitby. Dickerson said that it was "unfortunate that politics gets involved in the Olym- pics" and proposed that it was time te find a per- mnanent site for the games that was truly neutral grounds. However, he said a boycott of the games should only be used as a last resort. Posma agreed with Prime Minister Ctark's threat to boycott the Olympics although he added that the athtetes should be consulted with first. "We have friends south of the border and we have to support them,"1 was Fen- nett's response. "We must stand up and say no to the Russians."1 carreli terzned the Soviets 4"4aggressors" for their in- vasion of Afganistan and said that they should get out of thgt country's internat af- fairs. "Sport should be for frien- dship first, and then com- petition,"' she said noting that the only thing Canada shoutd do is achieve a totally mndependant foreign policy. Rison said that he was not an unreasonable man and that "I support Joe Clark, but only on the matter of the Olympics."i Clark recently stated that Canada would join the United States in boycotting the Moscow gaines if Soviet troope were not withdrawn from Afganistan by Februy 2o.
