That was one of the questions posed by a young memnber of the audience at last week's ail candidates meeting that was sponsored by the Whitby Jaycees. "Our leader is perfectly bilingual," replîed Rhino Party candidate J.C. Stranart, "He grunts and snorts." Perbaps the vast majority of people who are not familar with this political leader should be made aware that he is Cornelius the First and is a live rhinoceros who, according to Stranart, is presently living in a Montreal zoo. However, other questions posed to the candidates did take on a more serious note tliroughtout the evening. one of the most emotional answers concerned the Issues of abortion and capital punishnient. Geoff Bison, the NDP candidate said that "1discretion" should be used by both the mother and her physician adding that he had deep personal conflicts in this area and would accor- ding to the wishes of the majority of Ontario Riding residents. "'Killing -a fetus is ab- solutely wrong, " was the position of Libertarian party candidate Roîf Posma who sa id that an unborn child is a living human being and has a right to life. Marxist-Leninist Dawn Carreil said that children should be wanted and that society should provide for sufficient care, education and opportunity. "IWhy are women having to have an abortion? " was the real issue, not the con- cept of abortion itself, Carreli said. "I'm a pro-lifer," Liberal candidate Doug Dickerson said adding, however, that "the ultimate decision belong to the woman and her doctor." On the issue of capital pumislment, Dickerson said that there should be a "4restoration of the death penalty for cold-blooded murderers whose guilt is beyond all reasonable doubt. " Posma said that the death penalty should be re- introduced for pre- meditated murder and terrorism. A survey that was conduc- ted whle he was in office showed that 85 per cent of those r eponded were in favor of the return of the gailows Fenneli said adding that lie would vote for it when a bill was presented to parliament. " Carreil said that the situations in which crime is committed must be clianged,' that would eliminate the problem of capital punishment. Another popular topic was whether or not Canada should boycott the 1980 Olympie Games in Moscow.
