J WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1980, PAGE 7 Elect ion 1980 Questionai re Foreign affairs is flot otten an issue ln Canadian politics. What do you believe Canada 's action should be regarding the hostage-taklng incident in Iran and Soviet aggression in Afganistan? D ickerson Terrorism, irrespective of who, where or why must be condemned in the harshest diplomatie terms possible. While we must consider the consequences of standing firmnly by our ally, the United States, we should be prepared to join in any international san- ctions against Iran that the United Nations impose. Hostage-taking and the taking of another country's embassy simply cannot go unchallenged or uncon- tested. The Soviet thrust into Afganistan is clearly an effort to set up another puppet regime using violence and killing as the cheif means. Canada is qwite correct in agreeing not to make up any shortfall of grain shipped to the Soviet Union. Fenneil Canada's position regarding the situation in Iran was expressed very well, I believe, in the Joint Commonwealth Statement that was issued on November 27th, 1979. In that statement, External Affairs Minister Flora MacDonald voiced the shared outrage of ail Canadians that "'whatever the nature of the dispute between souvereign states, the taking and holding hostage of diplomatie personnel and the violation of diplomatie premises could not be justified. Such events, whereever they occur, were in violation of international law and jeopar- dized the fabrie of international relations". The Canadian Embassy took a vital leadership role in coordinating and organizing other embassies in Iran during the initial stages of the crisis. We have officially protested the hostage taking incident and have made known to the United States our willingness to be of assistance in any practical way to aid the citizens of that country. The United States has voiced appreciation at our support in this in- cident and 1 feel confident that we shall continue to -support our neighbout and good friend during this grave time. The grave breach of international peace which has been committed by the Soviet Union in Afghanistan cannot and must not be ignored. Only the total respect of one another's sovereignty and indepen- dence will we be able to continue working.towards international cooperation and understanding. I believe that the steps taken by Prime Minister Clark are sound steps in expressing our stron con- demnation of the Soviet action. Posma Canada should show solidarity with the U.S. Re: the hostage-taking incident in Iran. Since very little predictable behaviour can come from Iran with that lunatic Khomeini at the helm, Canada should do everything possible to prevent the rendering of legitimacy to that government. The behaviour of the present govermnent of Iran is erratie and can- not be considered civilized at the time. As for Afghanistan, Soviet agression into that country is predictable behaviour for that totalitarian state. Canada should consult with its friends and allies to determine what the most strategie counter measures should be. It is in Canada's interest that Soviet hegemony in the Middle East does not become a reahity. Lastly, Canada could withdraw government support from the Canadian Olympic Team to prevent it from gaing to Mascow. Rison In canvassing and addressing groups across the ritling, r-have not found foreign affairs to be an issue. Rather medicare, PetroCan, U)e liquid waste facility in Ajax, and jobs have emerged. I wonder that two of these six questions are directed to issues outside Canada, when we have so many pressing problems, here, at home. Re: Iran and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the NDP supports a boycott of the Moscow Olynibics, and bas been urging that the UN make a decision to act - by which we would abide.
