P~AGE 16. WEI)NESDAY, JANUARY 9.,1980. WHITBY FREE PRESS St. John's encourages lknowledge of first aid for &jmnor sports fan It makes Frank Golaz mad when adults won't stop a gamne for a few minutes so that an injured child can be given first aid treatinent. "I was at a lacrosse gaine when a. boy was injured. 1 suspected a break and held uthe3 cUamP intil the victim could be taken off the field on a stretcher. The referee was going to penalize the team". Golaz is a member of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Ajax, and he's been on hand as a volunteer to rovide first aid at a -lot of sports events. He's firmnly convinced that someone working with every group of young people who play organized sports should have first aid training. "We're tired of seeing kids injured and not getting correct treatinent, or get- ting delayed treatment. It's as if the game's More impor- tant than the child. " "Coaches say we just don't have the time to get training." A St. John Ambulance fir- .st aid course takes eight hours or 16 hours, and can teach amateur coaches and trainers what not to do as well as what to do if a young player is injured. Correct first aid, applied quickly can rninimize the consequences of an injury and keep it frorn getting worse. And sometimes it's important to know enough not to move somneone who is hurt until his injury is properly sup- ported, or to know enough not to move him at ail until you can get medical help to him, he says. Doing the wrong thing can make an injury worse. Golaz says, "If you don't know what you're doing, don't do anything until you get help.
