"We need every nickel we can lay our hands on," says YWCA executive director Eva Martin BIyte. -'We're attempting to hold our own in spite of these cuts.", The YWCA Community Partners prograin, which works to find. affordable housing for homeless and abused women and children Sin Durhamn, is the latest to bave its funding cancelled by the Ontario Ministry of Housing. That program, due to continued support fm Durham Region, is now operating with one part-time staff person, says Blythe. Ini 1995, the program served more than 1,700 clients with one fuIl-time staff member. 'We're eliminating ail staff positions that are possible, but we still think we can continue to provide the quality of service that is necessary," Blythe says. As part' of its efforts to make up for the provincial funding'cuts,, the YWCA is making a direct mail Christmas card appeal to i .owmanviîle artist, contributed a pen-and ink 3drawing for the card 1depicting Adelaide' House, the original McLaughlin estate that now houses the YWCA. Barbara Hodgins, who chairs the direct mail committee, has compiled a database of organizatbons and individuals the YWCA has been able to count on for support in the past. Goal of the Christmas card appeal is $10,000, she says. "If we can do better, we'd certainly like to," Hodgins adds. YWCA programs, ranging from counselhing te assistance for homelesa women and their children te, medical and psychiatrie services,# as wll as much- needed repaira te its residences, have ahl suffered due to the provincial fundxng cuts, she says. Two years ago, loss of governmnent dollars forced the YWCA to close AppLE House, a housing facility serving abused women and their children in the Ajax- Pickering area. In Its place, the YW7CA now offers a counselling and referral service.
