So let us,'in a logical and clear fashion, deal wlth the objections raised by those of a more skeptlcal mindset., First, there is the issue of the numerous Santa Clauses that one finds in the mails and at the end of parades across the whole country. Ciearly, flot aIl of them can be the actual Santa Claus, 50 are they ail frauds and falces? Not at ail: they are each hîs personal representatîves. Many, many chlldren (and thelr parents) want to. see Santa at this time of-year, and wlthout the help 0f these dedicated, honoraiy elves so many chlldren would be disappoînted. And think how sad that would make S. Claus. But, like ail good supeivisors, Santa likes to mhake surprise visits and inspections, 50 you can neyer be really sure whether or not you are slttlng'on the genuine article. Let us now move on to the issue of toys, speclflcally the life-size Barbie doîl that has been requested by yourself and your younger partner Elizabeth. When we raised the issue of per capita costs of said items, you replied that the doîl was on your list for Santa, and since Santa makes ail the toys himself, it willlnot cost us anythlng. Good point. However, Santa has a clear understanding of the type and amount of toys that parents feel are appropriate for each given child and wouild neyer dispute parental cholce in this matter. Further, there are a lot of children ln the world, and Santa, Ilke ail mommies and da ddies, is facing more requests with a tighter budget (the cost of elves, reindeer and other materlals keeps golng up). So the fact that a lfe-sized Barbie wlll not be under the tree means only that Santa has respected our wishes on this matter. 1 arn confident that what Santa does drop down the chlmney MIl meet with ail our approval. Next issue: Why does Santa not go to your friend Trevor's house? Another exellent question. Trevor and his famlly celebrate Hanukkah. During Hanukkah, gifts and Hanukkah geit are exchanged (as you remember from your cousin's party last year). Santa goes only to those houses where he Is invited, and would neyer be s0 rude as to visit where he is not a part f that familv's traditions. Next question: If Santa visits aIl the chiidren, then why do we need to coliect toys at the church and schools? One of the gifts that Santa gives to each 0f us Is the opportunity to help bring Christmas into the world. Christmnas grows in our hearts, not through what we get, but what we are willing to give 50 that other girls and boys wake up on Christmas mom with that same sense 0f excitement. Were Santa to do, everyhlng, then we would not truiy experience Christmnas. 1For the truth is that ail of us, at some point, have needed a, heiping hand from family, friends, or our community. And flnaliy, your last question: Is Santa Claus Canadian? 0f course! He ives in the north and dresses ln a warm suit of red an d white, the colours 0f the Canadian fiag. But he wasn't aiways Canadian. Like our family, Santa origlnally immigrated from another country. ln his case, he started life in Turkey as Nicholas 0f Myra- and came here around tme end 0f the last century. 'S0 Sarah, there you have It.
