Octagon teens earn honours for community work Three local teens were recognized 'for their comnmunity involvement by the Brooklin Optimist Club at their.youth appreciation dinner reoently. Ail three youths are members of the Brooklin Octagon Club, a local group for teens. Bob Carney, president of the youth group, received recognition for leadership as the club won the Dave Dubois Award as the most actve youth group in Central Ontario. Dan Guika received his award for his persistence in co-ordinating varjous programs and activities for the group during the past year. He organized programs including a trip to, Canada's Wonderland, Bruce National Park, Toronto Ski Show and gan upcorning six-day trip to Mt. Ste. Anne, Que. for snowboarding. Ken Montgomery has been the driving force and an asst to the Town of Whitby's parka department in jdeveloping a permanent solution to issues related to skatbarders in Brooklin. rHe contrlbuted to an open fôruni in August that resulted in Town council establishing a mandate to provide a permanent skateboarding facility in Brooklin in 1997. In September, he received permission to instail a tempoérary skateboarding facility at Optimuat Park in Brooklin, and co-ordinated the design and building of wooden ramps for the facility. Lit wil give fuil at the corner of Baldwin Street (Highway 12) and the creek on Cassels Road. Built in 1876 as a church, the building first served one and then another congregation until 1916. An addition was built and until 1965 the building served as an administrative centre for Whitby Town- ship. The building, with further changes, then became the community centre.
