GÃ"OD IRALTH store * ~... .Derek Dutka - Independent Financial Planner' . .....There's a lot of pessim ism n about the stock mnarket. W hat S should 1 do with my mutual funds? A* That really depends on your personal investing philosophy. Let me touch on two basic strategies; market timing versus buy'and hold. The market timing strategy implies that investors (or their advisors) . can accurately predict what the stock market will do in a short period of time. Selling now to lock in profits is easy. The harder part is when to L -Abuy in again. What happens if the market is stili going up six months from.now? You also need to factor in any fees that might be incurred and whether or flot the sale will trigger a taxable gain. Those two costs might reduce your portfolio more than a market correction. Personally, 1 use the buy and hold strategy because 1 plan to leave my investmnent in place for at least 5-10 years. I might need to draw a portion 0f them in an emergency, but not the majority, therefore 'm not too concemed about the next six months. However, it is prudent to ensure you have enough-secure funds to cover known expenditures over the ndxt 6-24 months. 4PLANVEST FINANCIAL CORPORATION 187 King St. E. Oshawa a 579-7777 Ralph Schroetter GG., F.G.A.- Certif ied Gemologist 4IIj My birthstone is Alexandrite. I like the fact it has a colour change. Is there a stone that can change colour naturally but does not cost as much as a real Alexandrite? Ae There are a number of gemrstones. Alexandite from Russia changes colour from red to green because of trace elements of chromium in the crystal structure. It is this same element that causes colour changes in some Sapphires and Garnets. Colour change Sapphires offer a very affordable alternative to the Alexandrite, with very beautiful stones in the1 to 2 carat range costing about 1 /1Oth that of Alexandrite. They offer the beauty of both Sapphire and Amethyst in one stone, with the colour change effect ranging from a sapphire blue to a purplish blue. In Canada this stone is mostly unheard of and this can account for it's lower price in comparison to Alexandrite. For a person who spends a little time finding one, the reward of a splendid conversational gem is worth the hunt. -k utoin Jewellery 211 Brock Street South (beside firehall)Whtby.- 666-4612, Murray Kideckel - Trustee in Bankruptcy e My debts are just too much to handle.
