Fifeen regional, county' and local municipal governrnents, including Durham* Reglon, are participating in a travel SUrvey of more than '163,000 households to help munlcîpalitjes meet their future needs for roads and transit services. #uThe Transportation Tomorrow Survey '96 will examine the travel habits and preferences of residents of the Greater Toronto Area as well as the extended area from St. Catiiaines to Barrie and* Peterborough," says Peter Dalton, survey general manager. "It* will help in making decisions about- road and transit improvements and provide information for long- terni planning.» The first phase or the survey will involve the Greater Toronto Area including the regions of Durham, Halton, Hamilton- Wentworth, Peel and York, and Metropolitan Toronto. "This survey will help us better respond tel each community's needs," says Dalton. "The Population of the survey area is expected te grow te well over six million people in the next 20Oyears. We need te assesa how this will affect our transportation system and ensure that it can meet the increased requirements. This Is the third Transportation Tomorrow Survey. The first was conducted in 1[986* and a second survey was carried out in 1991. In 1996, more than 163,000 households are scheduled te be contactcd (one In every 20), Includin 13,000 in Durham Region. Information gathered in the 1986 and 1991 surveys has been used te plan a wide range of transportation activites in the Greater Toronto Area.. The survey consista of a telephone Used for statistical purposes only, ail information related -to individual householda wlll be kePt strlctly confidential.
