Tomorrow qwhen you get -out of your bed, and put on your clothes, and grab a glass of juice out of your refrigerator before you leave the house to get into your car and drive down to the highway, keep in mmnd that this is our workplace and there are a lot of things you would flot have if ail these trucks were flot out there. Understanding how massive and essential the tricking industzy is in our everyday life, be reminded that evey industry has michinery and machines break down. Somnetimes it's3 human error and som1etimes it'. fatigue, but they do break. -Ini our industry, our machines are trucks and because we are forced to share our workplace with the public, it leaves us vezy ittle room for error. Imagine 50,000 of the general public running around General Motors everyday. You want to talk about accidents. Contrary to what you have been hearing, the safety record of the trucking industry is very good. In 1994 tractor-trailers were only involved in 92 out of 1,509 fatal accidents ini Ontario (MTO stats), but even more interesting than that is 71 per cent of those were the fault* of the other motorist. That makes tractor-trailers only responsible for 27'out of 1,509 fatal accidents. That is a very good record. Very few truck accidents --.---are due to mechanical defect or brakesôut-o f-adjustrnent. The t u'è~ o. ruck- rýelated'fatalities caused by othéer motorists (65 out of 92) should be more ofa concern, and that is why the attitude on our highways has got to change. The sensationalized hype from the media and government has done nothing but strike fear, hatred and hostility on our highways.
