By Steve Leahy Last month the Durham -public sohool board notified people who use Meadowcrest Public Sehool for varlous evening and weekend programs that the school would be closed. A public protest got the board te amonid their decision and allow children's groupa such as Scouts and Guides te use the school until 8 p.m. While Scouts and Guides will continue te use the school free of charge, other groups are facing a 15 per cent fée increase - and weekend fees are now unaffordable at over $50 an hour. These, fees mean the end of many cornmunity eventa such as the many chldren's and adult volleyball teurnaments that have been held in the small gym on Saturdays. Apparently the parka and recreation department'is -looking Into ways that Meadowcrest can remain open toenimunity groupa. BUT'ERLYSEASON Heres something unexpected - early July is the height of the butterfly season. Look for flowers and you'll find butterfiies. The Durham Field Naturalista do an annual butterfly count in the aiea and have, identified as many as 43 different types ofbutterflies on one outing., .For those of us who seem only te see the odd Monarch butterfly now and again, that seems like an awful lot. But there are in fact more than 500 distinct types of butterfiies i the eastern U.S. and Canada. Butterfies thrive in wooded areas and undisturbed meadows. When somehing flutters by, wait for it te settle and then use your binoculars for a good look. But with yards that have little else but lawns, along with using pesticides, well, thore just aren't enough wildflowers for a butterfly -te bother visiting.
