The 17 hospitals in the area surrouniding Metro Toronto - the so-called 'GTA 905 area code regions' - serve more than haîf o! the four million people in the GTA, the associations say, but received less than a quarter of the money given to Metro Toronto hospitals in 1992-93, the last year for which figures were available. That works out te $317 par person in Durham, Halton, Peel and York, compared te, $1,041 par person in Metro Toronto; the average par capita hospital allocation acrose the provinoe was $687. Ini a proposal te health minister Jim Wilson, the hospitals ask that he take inte account the growth in the GTA 905 area and exempt it flrom acroas-the-board budget cuts. They argue that high growth has meant the equivalent o! a 15 par cent eut for area hospitals in the last five years alone when compared te average growth areas. They're also suggesting Durhamn hospitals receive a four percent a year incroase, to cope with the four peroent a yoar growth the region is expected te experlence. "We're not asing for new money," said Steve Wilson, board chair o! Bowmanville Hospital. 'rWe just wa.nt it te, be more equitably used and distributed co across the province."
