WhltbyArives phot 'Magnificent'- photo taken 100 years ao By Brian Winter Town of Whitiy Archivist One hundred years ago, a photograph unique in Whitby's history was constructed by the town's pliotographer, William Edward O'Brien. I say 'constructed' because the finished picture consisted of 87 separate photographs taken individually and assembled on a painted background. Entitied 'The Business and Professional Men of Whitby,' the photogaph cansisted of' 84 indivdal portraits of Whiitby's businessmen, and three scenes: Burr Lodge on Centre Street Soutli, Jeffrey FMats at Lynde Creek and Jeffrey Street, and the Ontario Ladies' College (now Trafalgar Castie Sehool). This type of picture, called a copste photograph, was pparin the l9th oentury. Famed Montreal pliotographer William Notman was famous for bis composite pictures. Tbey were handy when ail family members could not be present for one sitting, for the people could be photographed individually over a period of days or weeks, and the pictures pasted on a paintedbacground. In the May 17, 1895 edition, theWhilnty Chronicle stated: "r .E. OBrien, the artiat, will this morning place on exhibition in his window an immense photograph of one hund.red of the businessmen of Whitby, grouped by a process from single photographs. 'The work is well done and frorn it he intenda to strike off large quantities of eight-by-tens. ,W'Th enterprise of Mr. O'Brien in getting out this enormous and costly work is highly recommendable and deserues splendid recognition at the handa of our citizens. " The Clironicle article headline was «'A Magnificent Photo!' The Town of Whitby Archives possesses a large raxned capy of the pliotograpli witli ail but one of the naines of the 84 busfinessmen identified. The archives aise lias one of the sinaller copies. One other major composite photograph bas been identified as a work by OBrien. Similar in format ta, the Wliitby picture, it is a composite of the employees of the McLaughlin Carniage Company, Oshawa. It was aise, taken in 1895. This picture contains portraits of 130 men and pictures of the carriage factory and Robert MLaughlin's home. The original of this picture was three feet by four feet in size, mounted on canvas. It is recorded that O'Brien took 109 of the individuel portraits in one day. No aother composite photographs by O'Brien are known. Hours of work and expensive equipment were needed ta praduce such detailed works. OBrien hoped. ta recover bis casts by selling large numbers of copies of the pictures. Little is known of OBrien, wha produced these masterpieces of the photographers art. His abituary states that he was born in Oshawa in 1857, although bis exaggerated advertising states that he was born near Bobcaygeon and bis father was a Russian nobleman. He came to, Whitby in 1884 and set up a studio in the roomns above what is now 110 -ta 116 Brock St. N. He was Whitby's only photographer at that time. About 1895 or 1896, lie went inta partnership with Oshawa's photographer, a Mr. Stedham, at Stedharn and OIBrien, operatxng studios in both communities until after 1900. A posecard from Oshawa, dated July 7, 1897, states that he was ~w $ T ........ at the Whitby Gallery, as he called it, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, when he *took group photographs at $3 per dozen. In 1885, shortly after he came ta, Whitby, O'Brien specialized, in taking group photos, but did not turn ta, composites until 10 years later. The Town 'of Whitby Archives bas copies of bis group photos of the Whth Brass, Band and the Whitby fire department, taken in 1885. After 1900, OBrien moved -ta Toronto and retired. He collapsed and died at age 67, while attending a hockey game at the Mutual Street arena in Toronto on Feb. 18, 1925. He was buried in Toronto's Mount Pleasant Cemetery. DID YOU KNOW? That Bassett Boulevard is naxned after ]Richard Norman Bassett (1880- 1940), mayor of Whitby in 1923 and 1924. Bassett, a jewefler, awned many of Whitby's downtown buildings.
