The two 15-year-old Whitby residents recently received their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award, are working toward their silver award- and looking forward to receiving the- gold, which is presented by Prince Philip. Organizers last week announced that more than $1.02 million lias been raised. for the campaign for Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington. This Years goal is $3.2 million. The campaign's' director of development, Robert Howard, says there are "generally positive trends in ail areas oî tme campaign. "0f particular note is the City of Oshawa campaign which is well underway and going strong with an enthusiastic committee of volunteers."t SSusan Abbott, Durham Region manager for TD Bank and the chair of the campaign's business division, says "Vie are getting great support from many areas of business in our conimunity."t Sh. also wants area residents who are commuters to designate the Oshawa-Whitby-Clarington United Way on their pledge form. That's where Marlene Buttery, who received the gold award from Prince Phulllp when she was 17, came in. Buttery got them interested in participating and helped them plan their activities and document how they met the four requirements te receive a Duke of Edinburgh Award. To qualifr, entrants have te go on an overniglit expedition (three days for silver, four for gold in an. "unfamiliar and challenging surrounding"), "show perseverance and progrese" in developing a MICHAEL CALDWELL (Ieft) and Aaron Price are now engaged in activities to attain silver and gold medals in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program. Both youths say earning the. awards lias been a lot of fun and a good way to make friends., They're not alone; over two milion young ]pçople in more than 40 countries have taken part in the program since it began i 1956.
