Truck driver not. responsible- for accident By Mike Kowalskl A Whitby transport truck driver was not responsible for an accident that demolished another vebicle and tied up traffic on Highway 401 for several hours last wee k. Ontaro Provincial Police say no charges were laid against the unidentified man in connection with the accident that occurred west of Port Union Road in Scarborough on Wednesday afternoon. Instead, police are focusing.their efforts on fincing the driver of a car whose illegal lane change led to a spectacular crash between the truck and a second vehicle. Collision dlaims liTe A 19-year-old Ajax man 'was killed in a two-vehicle collision at Hîghwýay 7 and Halls Road Sunday morning. Ontario Provincial Police say Michael Pineo was travelling south on Halls -Road in'bis 1984 Plymouth and failed to stop for the stop sgn. at the intersection at ighway 7. Hls vehicle was struck broadside by -a westbound 1993 Ford driven Iby John Buchan, 60, of Lindsay as it 'entered the intersection. Pineo * di*d as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.. A p assenger MInbis car, Michelle Dunn, was taken to Oshawa General Hospital, where she's listed in saisfactory condition. Buchan and wife Elizabeth were taken te Whitby General Hospital. His wife was also stabilized and taken te hospital in Peterboroughi. oflhitand run A Whitby cyclist was badly inijured when struck by a hit-and- run driver in Ajax on Monday night, Oct. 2. 1Derrck Oliver, 33, was riding hi. bicycle along the right edge of Bayly Sizeet, just- west of Lakaridge Road, at about 7:30 p.m.L He was3 struck from behind by an eastbound vehicle and knocked off bis bicycle. His left leg was badly hurt, and he was left laying on the ground. A passing motorist saw Oliver and stopped, and called police and ambulance from bis car phone. Oliver was taken to Ajax-Pickering Hospital. Durham Regional Police say the vehicle lias some damage to the Ini manoeuvring bis rig to avoid colliding with the first car, the truck 'driver slammed into a second car and dragged it several feet down the highway before the twisted wreckage broke free. Although a passerby had ta rescue the car driver from the burning shell, lie emerged relatively unscathed from the mishap and was released from hospital later that night. "After talkcing to the drivers of both vebicles, we found there was a third vebicle involved," said OPP Constable Mike Zelasko who was first on the scene. "It was indirectly caused by another vebicle making an improper lane change and the truck driver had to take evasive action," said Zelasko. "The accident was caused by the actions taken by the driver, but lie was not responsible." According to police, the tractor-trailer, that was carrylng a load of steel from Co-Steel Lasco, was westbound when it -smashed Attfempted murder charge A 39-year-old Whitby man was charged with attempted -murder after a stabbing at a 200 Garden St. apartment building early Sunday morning. Police say four mal. residents of the building were drinking at one of the apartments around 4 a.m. when two of the men started arguing. The car was forced througli about 20 wooden posts holding up the metal guardrail before it finally came to a stop about 25 metres from the initial impact. The truck continued on a short distance until it too-broke through the guardrail and crossed into the eastbound lanes. No other vebicles were involved and the truck driver, whose name and employer are being withheld by police, was not hurt. Zelasko çaid the tractor-trailer was fairly new and that it did not have any mechanical defects. Police are sill talkting to witnesses in the hope of flnding the driver of the other vebicle involved, Zelasko said. "It was a gold car and male driver. At tbis point, no plate number has been obtained," he added.
