Whitby Free Pross, Wedneeday, October 41995. Page 7 War games Today I would like to introduce you to a card. gaine called bridge. Ever watch presehoolers play cards? How they throw them aIl ini a pile, yell, "Grab!' and thrust both hanids in? Winner cornes up with the greatest number ofcairds. Bridge is sonxething like that. Bridge belongs'to a group of card gaines mn which the objeet is beating the snot out of the other aide. Other gaines of the saune war family meclude eucbre, whist, hearts and somne others I don't know how te play either. These gaines revolve around tri cks. These are not to be confused with the tricks which belong te ladies of the iglut Those have te do with johns, while card games have to do wth jacks. Each of four players thirows a card on the table. Hlighest card wins. Just like war of preschoolers. For confusion, aIl these garnes throw in truunps and stuif. Think of trumps as a group that got proinoted te management. They geàtot lord it over everybody. Except in hearts. Hearts is basically a beer-drinking gaine, the object of which is te not win the tricks except sometimes. Which is winning. Bridge holds ahl the joy of this War stuif, plus it also adds a feature calîed bidding. Bidding means, basically, guessing how many tricks you can take out of the 13 possible. Straightforward? Nothing ever is. First, if you want 13 tricks, you bid only seven. And if you want seven, you bid only one. And if you want, say nine, then you bid three. TIhen there's the suits. Clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades* andl no truxnp. (You heard the one about the group of coal uiners who got fired? They went te a lawyer te launch an unjust dismissal suit. The lawyer turned them away, saying, "Sorry, we don't allow miner suits in here.") Oh, boy. So the secret is, neyer say whàt you really mean. Iàke, if you have a fisiul of spades and want spades in the worst way, you let your partner know by biddung one no trump. But your partner, really in her heart wanting te bid three hearta, kicks you under the table and says, "three clubs." To which you reply, "four diaxnonds," smnce that means you have lots of spades. And you partner cornes back, ",five clubs," which uneans she has five aces, when your opponent then juunps ini and says, "six spades," and then you got hum where you want him. This hidden bidding code remmnds me of dating when I was a teenager. Everything means the opposite of what it 's. 'TYou look great tonight." I like the way Brylcreem makes your hair shine." "Isure you'll like this war movie." 1 think I've mun out of gas." "Gee, that's too bad." "No. I mean we really did. See?' "Goodnight. Thanks, I had a really good Urne." "Especially the walking-for-gas part."' Anyway: Back te bridge. One of the marvels of this modem age lies in high technology. Fifty years ago my grandfather wore out three deeka. of carda a year playing solitaire, euchre and ruxnmy. Each Christmas, and irt.hday, he ireceived aq9.ent dpeck of carda.- - w ALGOMA TOUBIST CABINS, DUNDAS STREET -AST, C. 1945 A touriet stopping place since at least the 19309, this je now the Canadian Motel.
