During Monday's Town opera- tions committee meeting,'ý Chris Prentioe of Delcan Corporation, presented the mmii recommenda- tiona of the. study, which should' drastically alter Borne aspects of the transit systern. Varlous itemns that 'will im- vrove the se-vice will cost an ex- tra $62,990. However, a fare in-- creaee and more ride-rship ini com- lng years is expected to defraythe extra cost. The 1996 fares are projected to b. *1.50 for adulte, an increase *of 30 cents. Students will pay $1.25, an increase from the present $1.15, while seniors and children will be pay 70 cents, five cents more. GO Train pe.ssngers who have a valid train faLre will no longer receive a free ride. For single trips, the passengers will have to ante up 25 cents, while monthly. passes, now available at no eout, will cost $10. For- regular monthly transit passes, the eust ranges from $21 for children and seniors, to $46 for adulte. 1 Other recomniendations in- élude: erealignment of some routes to reflect the growing population; *'upgradingcf the Handi-Tran- it service; *the set-up cf a central. termi- nal at the GO station; *service te Brooklin by 1997; *the purchase of small buses for some underutilized routes; *aggressive marketing unclud- ing advertisung on shelters. A proposai w implement a dial- a-ride system was deferred for further study by staff. The proposai would see riders to the industrial areas in the south of the town phonie and ar- range for a taxi to pick them up at the GO station. Then after paying a set fare to the taxi driver, the rider would receive a trip te his destination. East wardI councillor Dennis Fox was concerned that taxpay- ers would subsidize the taxi com- panies for providing this service. However, the reports authors said that the Mytem would save the Town money and bas been tried / successfully by Peterborough and Welland, among other municipalities. 436-180 'Your Sigin of Disincion" Decorators Deljght $199,000 This home has ail the extras and is decorated top to bottom. Slean as he watched eager students lay sod on Henry Street H-igh School's new sports fields ist week. Some 250 voiunteered to heip out Friday morning, and they worked'so fast the trucks delivering sod couidn!t keep up with them, says Slean, head *of the boys phys-ed department, between answering questions from 'students wanting ta volunteer. "You always think that -kida wili do aimost anything for a day- off.., but these guys are saying, you know, when I corne back in 15 years I can say I laid that. I put that down,'" said Slean. "Do we have ta go to classes?" -a student interrupted. "Not if you're working - if you're floating around, just talking ta guys, not doing much of anything, you may as weii go back ini," Slean, replied. "But don't I have ta tell a teacher or something?" "No, your teachers will know where you are; half the teachers are probably out here anyway!" Students have been generous with financiai help, too, Slean continued. About 150 pledge sheets have been handed out and "I've had kids give me $230 (or) $240 from piedges they've picked Up." Students have raised around $2,000 in pledges so, far, he estimated, with more ta corne; "but we'il always take maney," Slean added. Warld of Vending, which operates pop machines at the. school, also played a pivotai raie, said Slean, by giving the physical education department a loan ta pay for the. sod.' "They basically said 'look, we'll give you an interest-free loan and you just take it out of your pop receipts (ta pay it back) over the neit thiree or four years." He estimated the total. cost of the. project, whicii includcd removing the aid jogging track and digging up and levelllng the aid field, at about $40,000 ta $45,000.
