(Whitby plans to build bouses near Lake Ontaro.). This project is privately funded, with no tax increases and no hourly ico rentai increase., It soems to me Oshawa council haê a botter knowIede of urban ipannng than Whitby council. With leincroaaed populations Oshawa and * Whitby are experioncing, the need te increase rocreational facilities is imminent. 1994FINA CLEAROUT SENTRA XE 4DR 5 SPD N/C SENTRA XE 4DR AUTO SENTRA XE 4DR AUTO A/C ALTIMA XE 4DR AUTO ALTIMA SE TOPMME DEMO AUTO OUEST XE LOADED MINI-VAN HUSTLER PICKUP 5 SPID KING CAB PICKUP 5 SPD KING CAB PICKUP AUTO KING CAB V6 AUTO, A/C, DEMO 179100 .14e990 16,205 13,990 189225 15,990 20,175 17,975 27e175 239095 269190 23,190 14,570 13,320 15,865 14,615 179415 169165 19,824 17,9931 *ALL OTHER FEES & TAXES INCLUDED * PLUS PST, GST, PLATES LOAEI *Air Conditioning * Dual Air Bags - Premium Uphostery - Power Windows - Power Locks - Power Mirrors , -*Tilt & Cruise - AM/FM/U Cassette - Rear Seat -. However, aftor reading in the Whitby Froe Pross the commenta of north ward councilor Don Mitchell, I wonder if we the taxpayors and our children will ever get much needed new ice pads. Mitchoil said the budget provides for the design Of one or more ice pada at Iroquois Park, but ho strossd that this does not commit council te bilding a, new facility. .A. proposod $20-por-hour increase in ice rates added te $136-per-hour prime turne rate (compared te $108-per-hour prime time for Oshawa) would help finance the project. I can rocail last summer Mitchell and members of his family woro in Uino for 24 hours for hockey rogistration. However, ince Oshawa announced a new four-plex, Mitchell is undecided if Whitby needs increased ice facilities. Mitchell aid "it looka like that with an increase ini ice rates we can finance it, assurning the 611l rate is thoro." Mr. Mitchell, this is urely speculation. Maybe if Witby council would co-operate with the private sector wo wouldn't have te, stand in lino for 24 hours for hockey registration. Instead, our children could be playing hockey, figure skating and taking skating lessns in new, privately fundod ice rinks. Derrick Minaret Whitby 8-year-old endures fan abuse To the oiter A letter te hockey parents After coaching in the Whitby minor hockey association for 15 years, I have nover been more' disgustod than I was on March 12, during a house league playoff gaine at the major squirt level. I have the good fortune te, have a very talented young boy la1 n on the team that I coach. Apparently, this does not sit well with saine of the parents. Froin the other side of the rink I could hear comments such 'as eGet se and so," "Take hum out" "Rfit hlm.". I even heard one sportamanlike woman yeil, 'Put (so and se) i the hospitai." Incidontafly, the boy te whom they were referring is eight years oi&L The coaches in this league do their best .te promote sportsmanship and fair Playflrst while attemptingf te teach the boys the slls o the gaine. This can be oxtremoly difficuit when smre moron yells these inds of comment&. Maybe- you don't roalize it at the turne, but these id do hear you. I know because they question it on the bench. L isnto yuselves, parents, and tbi beore you speak, maybe thon you won't injure the pride and self-esteem of an eight- year-o1d boy who bas the muefortune' te be a very taiented hockey player.
