In a best-of-three series aanat Oshawa, Whitby won the' frset two gaines, the titie and a trip to the provincial champion- ships in March. In gaine one, both teains started strongly with aggressive forechecking, allowing few scoing opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Julie Rowland opened the scoring for Whitby, picking up a rebound and drilling it past the goaltender. Two minutes later, Catie Challoner scored and two minutes after that, Natasha Carter scored to open up a 3-0 Whitby lead. Carter and- Rowland both scored again in the flrst haif te, coumter one Oshawa marker te, make the score 5- 1. Kimn Vanderlip, Challoner and Carter ail scored in the second half te *make the final 8-1. Sainantha Sheppard had an outstanding gaine in net and Erin Carroll played superbly at centre, dominating play and setting up four goals. Gaine two was a much dloser affair. WbIà tby opened the scoring again, with a bard shot from Vanderlip set up by Kara Easton. Carroll, continuing her strong play, scored twice te counter two Oshawa goals and carry Whitby's lead into the second half. Oshawa scored early in the second period te tie the score. Midway through the period, Erica Giles finally found a clear path te the Oshawa net and buried a bard shot past the goaltender te put Wihitby ahead to stay. Whity plyedstrong teain defence for the last eight minutes, not allowing any clear scoring opportunities and hangizng on for a 4-3 win. Petite s get past Pickering The Whitby petite A ringette team has advanced te the provin- cial championships te be held in Sudbury over March break. The Whitby team, sponsored by Executive Copier, tied Picker- ing 4-4, overwhelmed Ajax 9-2, edged Oshawa 7-5 and then defeated Pickering 3-1 in the final. In the final, Jennifer Martel provided sparkling goaltending tlead Whitby. In the first gaine, Whitby f rai- led Pickering 3-1 before coming back for the tie. Against Oshawa, Whitby trailed 4-1 before taking over in the second period. Natalie Babony had 13 groals and* three assiste te lead Whitby corng in the tournament. Ta Henry had seven goals and, two assiste, Jade Blight three goals and six assists. Heather Peel had a goal and an assists, Krystal Chartrand three assists. The firet two gaines had Whitby coming out on the short end by scores of 4-2 and 4-1, while the third gaine saw Whitby return te discipline and bard work which resulted in a 4-3 win. Thé game on Feb. 22 had Qunite scoring a goal in each of the first two periods and then starting the-third with another te make the score 3- 0. Paul Gray and Steve Death worked te set up Mark Haynes for Whitby's firet goaL Quinte went to the boad once more te make it 4-1. Haynes scored again on a relay from Mfike Robertson te make tbe final score 4-2. Wbitby travelled te Belleville on Feb. 25, only te be met again by -a venj determined Quinte squad. Quinte managed te get two by Whitby in the second period and one early in the third te take a commanding 3-0 lead.' Hayes.managed te get Whitby's lone- goal after being set Up by Gray and Death. Quinte made the score 4-1 te, finish the gaine. Goahie Dan Fletcher had a consistent gaine in net in facing 31 shots. In a muet-win-situatjon, Whitby got a very solid effor from the offensive units as well as the defence and goale Tom Lawson on Feb. 26. Gray p ut in a solid performance witb four assiste, while Haynes had the bat trick and an assiet. Steve Death had a goal and three asssts. The firat two periods had the score tied at 1-1. Early in the third Whitby went abead only te bave Quinte tie the score. Again Whitby went ahead with two goals and it was not until late in the third Quinte 'ended the scoring for 4-3 finish.
