But there ay be little they can do about it. Town council's operations com- mittoe deferred a decision Mon- day on whether te build a tem- porary roadway te accommodate traffic during nextt year's con- struction of the Garden Street railway bridge. Instead committee directed Town stak te prepare a report on problems that could arise should the- roadway not. be built and traffic simply rerouted* away from the construction area.. Accessiblity te nearby honmes for fire and othor emergency vehicles, as well as pedestrian safety, will be among the issues examinedby fstaff. In a presentation te commit- tee, public works engineering manager Gary Carroll said con- struction of the long-awaited $6.9-million grade soparation ls schoduled te start in the spring Of 1996. Work will include a bridge and roadway underpass at the Cana- dien Pacific railway tracks, as well as reconstruction of Garden Street from Martinet Street and Kilberry Drive to Dundas Street. But before then, council must dec-ide if it wants to reroute traffic to Anderson and Brock streets or build a temporary detour on Garden to bypas the construction site. The temporar detour will cost an estimated $37,400 and lest for the duration of the anticipa- ted 18-month project, Carroll said. Although staff generally favour rerouting traffie due to the added cost and complexity of building a roadway detour, concerne were raised about blocking off Garden Street for that length of time. In response te a gquestion'from councillor Joe Drumm about the number of children who attend the schools in the area, Carroll said construction of a pedestrian walkway will cost an' additional $150$000. Pire Chief Tony VanDoleweerd said it would take longer te re spond 'te calis north of the tracks if temporary access is not provided.
