Atoms go up 2-O The Whitby minor atoin AA hockey teain opened their playoff series with two wins against a determined Richmond Hill teain. Whitby scored the only goal of the gaine in. the first period, Andrew Lamiot -assisted by Robert Eberle and Robin Cote. The gaine featured excellent goltending with Chris .Neniisz who got the shutout. The victory was seaed by the strong two-way play of Jef Hass, arid defensive plays led by Karen Farquharson. The second game played'in Whitby resulted in a 4-1 win. Both teains played tentatively in the first period, resulting in no scoring. Whitby turned- up the tempo in the second on a goal by Matt Annis. Sean Walsh made it 2-0 ini the second period after taldng a nice feed along the boards by Matt McKay. In the third period Whitby scored two more goals as Dana Bloom put somne mustard on a shot froin the point and Walsh scored bis second of the gaine on a nice three;way pasing play. However, with three minutes remainiïig in the gaine, Pickering scored three goals to make it 4-3. Whitby held on to, tie the series at 1-1. The defensive corps of Ryan Mendes, Bloom, Luc Hardn, Stefan Linlater, Reece Robertson- and Robert Lalonde played a strong gaine for Wildcats, allowing only six shots.on a goal in the first two periods and 14 shots overall. 7s win 3-O Whitbyls Select 7s hockey teain, sponsored by Beckçford Service Centre, shut out Hillcrest 3-0 in North York league play. Michael Trudeau's breakout pass put Adam Johnston in the clear for Whitby's first goal midway through t he first period. David Leahy and Nic Jardin conniined to spring Ryan Kerr for a 2-0 Wildcat lead with 50 seconds reînaining in the second. Jardin completed the scoring for Whitby in the third. Goaltenders Chad Thibodeau and Bennett Fitzgibbon shared the shutout. In exhibition play, 79 dropped a 3-1 decision to West HÎlI Golden Hawks. Brad Smith rifled a low shot for Whitby's score. Hawks took the lead early in the third and addedl an insurance marker late in the contest to deny a Whitby comeback.
