Whltby Free Press, Wednesday. December 21, 1994 , Page il C'est Watt!. "fsoothing to the senses" By Gavin Orisp Few have done what Bobby Watt bas accornplished. At a tirne when non-comform- ist rnusic is the trend and musi- cians must, if they want te sur- vive, abide by the over-changing face of music in order te, stay afloat and remain on the cutting edge rather than the cutting roorn floor Whitby's Watt bas shunned tle masses and,1 sur- prisingly eniough, is doing remarkably well. Emigratng te Canada frorn Scotland in 1975 for economic reasons, Watt brought with hirn a mellow, traditional Celtic sound that is soothing te the senses. This foreign sound is conveyed in Watt's second album, 'Cest Watt!,' reloased in Britain in oarly Otober and thon under an independent label in Canada. A guitar and bazooka (wind instrument) player for 25 years, Watt has incorporated these sounds of bis Scottish heritage and bas subsequently devised a formula for succese, evident in the album's 13 songe. "(The album) is a combination NewYear's bash planned A schedule of events has been organized for the New Year's Eve party at Cullen Gardons. 9 The Clebrate Durhamn'9 closing oeremonies get unrderway at 3 p.rn. with wagon rides, children's outdoor garnes, Siberian huskies and a bonfire, ail contintinguntil 9 p.rn. "Ifs5 not a 'green' album, per se, it'sjust that I was happy with tho way it came about ... the way the song came to me very quickly, the way it pressed upon me the fact thatI was more concerned about it than I thought. Ufl was neat how the whole thing came about." Alabaster Lady is just one of many songe on C'est Watt! that were written sololy by Watt hirn- self -- a change from tho first album's arsenal of songe, a majoriyof them co-written. "It takes very little tirne (te write a song). I usually accopt the flrst draft as it cornes eut as beinig what I want it te, be. 1) rnl ay change the odd word but for most of th e songs, it will sort of corne out of me in about an hour." This efficient style of songwrit- ing has eased the workload of th e albur's producer, Garnet Rogers, «who is a very famous performer in his own right,» according te Watt, and has made producing this album a true labour of love. And while love is naturally conveyed te the listener of C'est Watt! through Watt's ernotional melodios and heartfelt lyrics, more proininent is Watt's idea that everyene muet get along. This, along with the under- lying rneaning of empathy found deep within the albums9 coro, should prove te Watt's followers and non-followors alike that this album more than meets the eye. The album can b. found in the independent releases section of music stoes.
