Whî*tby team tough on The Whitby major novice AA hockey teamn, sponsored by Main Tech Industries, camne up with two victories on the road this past week. Oni Oct. 22 Whitby travelled te Pickering and won 2-0. Whitby's first goal was scored by Blake Robinson from Aaron Maguire and Ryan Johnston. The second goal was scored unassisted by Wayne Turcotte. A strong defensive unit again assisted goalies Kyle Simpson and Michael Jeffrey in their well-earned shutout. In Barrie on Saturday, Wlhitby Peewees get shutout The Whitby minor peewee select hockey teain, sponsored by Hard-Co, defeated Pickering Panthers at John Beer Arena 5-0 Oct. 28. With solid offence and defence, Whitby opened the scoring with a goal by Scott Cook with assista from Dà vid Besco and Gary Kitamura. .The second period saw goals by Kevin Taylor with assista by Ryan Meaney and Grant Howe, "and Charles Bouvièr on a 'shot frn the point. The third period produced two .more goals by Whitby, one by Mike Kobrynovich assisted by Chris Van Dusen and Stefan Hass. Rounding eut the scoring was Besco with assista by Kitamnura and Cook. the roaci won 2-1. In the second, Barrie took the lead. Whitby bounced, back immediately with a goal from Ryan Johnston on passes from Maguire and Matthew Race. Whitby scored with five minutes left in the gamne as Derek Rayner put the puck between the posts on a pass from Turcotte. Barrie was unable to score as Whitby was shorthandedilate in the third period. Whitby is unbeaten in their last four outings. Individually, Glen Dhu stu- dents had three first-place finishes, two seconds, two thirds and three fourth-place finishes. The school won four tearn titles, was second in two divi- sons, third in two divisions and fourth in another. The school had the top four finishers in the 14-year-old girls' division as Farin Es mail was first to cross the finish âne, followed by Kathy Janev, Jaimie Dickson and Jackie Flewellingf. Brett Backman was first axnong the 10-year-old boys and Richard John fîrst in nine-year- old boys. Eight-year-old Melanie Kirbr of Kathleen Rowe Public Schoo,. who only just recently won the Ontario provincial championship in Wingham, won the girls aged 8 and under division at the Durham competition. Brendan Peel of Pr-ingle Creek Public School won the 11-year- old boys'. division. Melanie's brother Brennan Kirby was third. 14e had finished eigkith at the provincial championship. Jenny Yolevsky of Pringle Creek was second in 12-vear-old gIrls Daniel Naccarato of Glen Dhu second in boys aged 8 and under, and Patricia Arbuckle of Dr. Robert Thornton second in 10-year-old girls. Jennifer Turner of R.A. Sen- nett was third in 11-year.old girls, Laura Bain of Glen Dhu t râ in nine-year-old girls, and Chantel Smith of West Lynde was third in eight-year-old girls. Col. J.E. Farewell won the 13-year-old boys' and girls' teà am tities, Pringle Creek the 11-year- old boys' team titie, and Dr. Robert Thornton the girls aged 8 and under team titie. More than 1,400 runners cern- peted in the 14 different races. The Whitby major novice AAA hockey teain won the consolation title in the Stoney Creek, Don Maxwell Memori aI tournament over the weekend. Wihitby defeated Brampton 5-3 in the final. Scott Morrison, Kyle Musselman, Kyle Vandeloo, Justin Sawyer and Greg Williamns scored. Assista went to Derek McTeague and David Arnold. Devin McLeod was solid in net. The semi-final 4-3 bass te' Mississauga was a close, seesaw battle. Kevin Mangoît scored on a strong shot from the point, but Whitby went scoreless in the second period, and trailed 2-1. A breakaway in the third period by Kyle Percewicz made it a 2-2 tie. An accurate pasa from Musselman to Morrison resulted in Whitby's third goal te tie the gaine again. With two minutes remaining in the third, Missssauga scored to win the gaine. Goaltender Bryan Macinnon made numerous saves te keep Whitby alive. On Oct. 29, Whitby beat Ajax-Pickering 2-1, with a great performance* by goaltender McLeod. Williamns scored both goals for Whitby. On Oct. 29, Whitby tied~ Niagara Falls 1-1. Niagara Falls,' with a breakaway, opened scoring in the first period. Whitby eutplayed Niagara Falls but couldn't put the'puck in the net. Whiitby's goal came in the third when Morrison made an accurate pass te Williams who put it away. On Oct. 28, defenceman Mangoît started -the attack in an 8-1 win over Chinguacousy. In the second, Vandeloo scored on a breakaway. Other goalscorers in the second were Adam Stein and Williams.
