Waste seminar for business The Durham Region works department will hold an industrial, commercial and institutional waste reduction seminar on Nov. 2. Seminar highligbts include Durhamn Region's waste reduction program, the province ' new 3Rs regulations, waste auditing techniques, local success stories, effective marketing and contract negotiation, new developments in cemposting, waste reduction and purcbasing options, new developments in waste reduction and recycling markets, reuse oppertunities. "It's very niuch like the Chrys- 1er cars -- it's a cabin-forward boat; the living space 15 forward wbere you can see out nicely and the sleeping spaoes aire aft, says PDQ vice-president Simon Sia- ter, son ofr designer Alan Siater, botb Whitby residents. "More importantly, you create a very nice, very comfortable centre cockpit area,» says Siater, who notes other catamaran designs have the sleeping quar- ters up front, living area in the middle and the cockpit in the back. The design isn't new. Slater says-bis father, a mechanical éngineer wvho's designedabout a dozen boats, bas had it on the drawing board for about 20 years, "But tbe yachting fraternity moves about as fast as molasses; it's a very traditionial community wbich responde very poorly to quick changes.» The boat also bas a removable fibreglass cover over tbe cockpit, wbich is «very different for the sailing industry.» The cover is strong enough te, walk on to work on the mainsails and will support solar panels or sunbathers, frinstance. "And it won't rot in the sun like canvass (used- on other cataramans) does?' PDQ waitedýfor the right time to introduce t1-, new vessel and its patience bas been rewarded. It has already sold nine of the innovative, 32-foot, double-hulled sailboats,- wbicb costs about $145,000, including options, and orders for another nine are in the works. *The Classic is up for Sail Magazine and Cruising World's boat of the year award. PDQ is working to bring the cost down "but they're extremnely expensive (te build). They're very fragile structures and, as such, have te be built witb very high- end materials. "And it bas te be Iligt, other- wise yeu don't get tebe advan- tages of a catamaran -- speed and comfort." ,A conventional boat uses lead te keep it rigbt "wbicb just drags the boat into the water even worse" and reduces its perfqor- mance, says Siater.
