Hawkeyes lost their first game of the season a week ago in Burlington, and were left in a three-way tie for second with Scarborough and North York. Hawkeyes scored early and offten, when in the first quarter they marched down the fied and capped the drive with a three-yard plunge up the middle by fullback Ashton Smith. In the second quarter it was Smiith again scoring on a 40-yard sweep, which was assisted by excellent blocking fromn David Norman and Daniel Essue. Smith started out the tidird quarter by again breaking tackles up the middle and outrunning the opposition for a 45-yard touchdown. The prettiast touchdown of the ~a me occurred when Wh-itby's Norman broke one up the middle, then suid to the right te avoid would-be tacklers, only te change direction sharply te, the left, leaving North York players in his wake as hie outran everyone for a 50-yard touchdown run. Bandits then scored a late touchdown to spoil Hawkeyes' shutout bid. A strong defensive' gaine was played by Lee Gallup and Whitby's Jason Pottinger, who led the team in tackles. The win sets up a second-place battie at Civic Pield in Oshawa next Monday morning when Hawkeyes meet Scarborough Thunder. The winner will take sole possession of second place and home field advantage for the playoffs. Hawkeyes are now 5-1 on the season and 17-2 over the past two seasons. Bantams off to a losing start Whitby lost their first two gaines of the regular season in minor bantam AAA hockey. On Sept. 24, Whitby lost 3-1 te Quinte. In the flrst five minutes, Quinte was outskating and forechecking VWtby. With Evan Kitamura holding firm between the pipes, Whitby gradually toek the play te Quinte, but could not finish on their scorng chances. Whitby then played their worst period, in the second, since pre-season began and fell behind 2-0 with sloppy, unagressive play in their own zone. The third started the saine and Whidtby feil behind 3-0. As 'the third .progressed, Whitby rediscovered their forechecking and from a faceof clearing attempt by Quinte, Wes Suddons let a high shot go fromn the point, which was deflected by a Quinte player into his own net. On Sept. 26, Whitby came out forechecking against York-Simcoe. In the flrst minute A . J. Shannon found the low glove side with assista te MNike Feret and Mike Longe.
