Photo by Mark Reesor, Whltby Free Press Whitby was the only municipa- lity in Durhami Region to refuse a Durham Nuclear, Awareness (DNA) deputation seeking sup- port for a public hearing on nuclear safety. DNA wants the hearing on the safety of the eight reactors at the Pickering A and B nuclear stations. The current two-year licences for the stations expire Dec. 31. ( The Atomic Energy Control Board may invoke an indepen- dent environmental assessnient hearing if significant public con- cern is expressed. DNA approached area munici- pal councils- and community groups for support, and has made presentations in Claring- ton, Toronto and Ajax, with more scheduled in Oshawa, Pickering, Uxbridge and Scarborough. DNA say9 the Region of Dur- ham and e o Toronto are stili considering DNA's request to make a deputation, but only Whitby refused a deputation. Mary' Kds learn about safe ty On Saturday, Sept. 24, St. John Ambulance will be at 127 Kmart store locations across Canada, including Whitby's, to promote safety for children belonging to Marty's Rida' Club. St. John will demonstrate first aid from 10 a.m. to 4 pm. Free safety tip stickers will be provided for ail Martys fids' Club niembers. Other activities include visits with Marty with breakfast (Pickering), lunch (Whitby) or snack (Oshawa); face painting, colouring station, ballong giveaways plus much more.
