Sept. 1 to 5. Vervynck was l6th in singles c petion at the 10-pin event, a itig "I didn't bowl very well.» But he improved in men's dou- bles competition, as hie and part- ner Jack Brace of Mississauga won the silver medal. He was seventh in mixed dou- bles as hie bowled with Sandy Lowe of Oshawa. He was eighth in «aIl events,» a.s scores fromn all competition are counted. Two of his Ontario' Whitby DDS Marketing girls' senior mite softball teain won the hitter's division house league playoff championship last week. In the double knockout playoff series, DDS had their baeks against the wall right off the bat after losing their first playoff gaine. DDS regrouped, however, to take their next four gaines to earn a place in the championship against the WGSA Jays. Entering the final match-up without a loss, Jays needed only to beat DDS once to take the championship. But DDS rose to the challenge. After posting a 16-3 lead, DDS hung on after a strong Jays comeback te, win the gaine 16-14. The final match was close until the bottom of the third inning t' when DDS shut down Jays' comeback attempt and then came out strong in the fourth inning to put the game out of Jays' reach. The final score was 18-10 for q DDS. DDS ended the regular season in second place. LI the final two-game series against Jays, every player got on bs at least twice. Coaches were Charlie Peel and Michael Sand. "I had a shot at going into the top three, but then I faced Brace," says Vervynck about his teammate who won silver.* Another teammate, BiilI Rowe of Hamilton, won the gold, while Mark Dol of Mississauga was third, for an Ontario sweep of the top three positions in match play. Raiders 2nd Whitby's under-14 premier rep soccer teain will advance te the elite division next season. Raiders, sponsored by the Bank of Montreal, finlshed second in their league with a record of il wins, three lasses and four ties. The month of August was not as successful as July. However, Raiders maintained their beague standing. Islington, first in the league, proved just a little too- strong for Whitby. Alter a 4-3 bass and 2-2 tie in previous league action, Whitby needed a win in their third meeting. Despite goals by Mike Schleiffer, Moi Tengelics and Stan Dymecki, Raiders could net gain ground against the stronger team, losing 3-5. Their next two league gaines resulted in ties. Alter a hard-fought scorelesa first half against Oshawa Turul, Mark Engelage converted a pass from Tope Akinbiyi for a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Oshawa's strong defence prevented further scoring and only seconds before the final whistle, Oshawa notched the tying goal. LI their next outing, Raiders felI behind 2-0 to Olympic Flame. t wasn't until the 3th minute of the second half that Schleifi'er connected on passes froin Engelage and Dymecki te give Wihitby the 2-2 tie. Alter this slow start li August. Raiders regained their momentum and finished the season with three wins. Craig Woods provided Engelage with an accurate pass for a goal, and Tengelics added another for a 2-1 victory over the York Jets. Raiders then defeated North Scarborough 3-1. The final beague game against West Rouge got off te a slow start with a scoreless tie at haîf-time. David Fillion was moved into the striker position where lie scored the first goal and assisted on two more. He was, tripped outside the penalty box, giving Whitby a free ick. Brian Rainey sent a high ball over the opposition's wall and successfully into the net. Mattin later converted a pass from Fillion te give Whitby a 3-0 victory. Brandon Cedar recorded the shuteut. Other team members include Daniel Demmer, Matt Brady, Bryant Harte, Stefan Nicota and James West-Bentley. The teani is coached by Gerry Rainey, Neil Harte and Laszlo Tengelics. Terriers win Cup .Following their recent league championsh-ip, Whitby Terriers steamrolled their way te, a playoff cup championship this past weekend li Uxbridge in under-14 soccer. The Whitby Tier 1 champions relinquished only one goal while scoring 49 goals in five play off gaines. Terriers started with a 16-0 victory over Ià ndsay whose players are one te, two years eIder than Wihitby's. The next gaine saw Terriers tied at half-time, with a determined Ajax teain, but Terriers' unrelenting attack scored six unanswere d goals in the second haîf te wln comfortably. The third gaine saw Whitby hammer Oshawa 10-1 in a domidnating display of skIll and teaznwork. xIn the fourth gaine an eider age Malvern team. was tom apart by Terriers' speed and passing which saw Whitby win 8-0. xIn the final, Whitby faced Oshawa, unable te match Terriers' speed and skill that ended in a 9-0 thrashing and the cup championship. Coach Bill Groden said: "Pin very proud of the players, they were the class of the league. 1110ur skill level rose dramatically over the season because the boys worked very liard at practice and the results are a testimony te their discipline and detex-mination."
