Take a Heritage Day stroll on Byron Everyone is encouraged to come out and join the fun on Heritage Day, Saturday, Sept. 10 in downtown Whitby. The Whitby Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee has organized a number of interesting events for this year's celebration. Earl Pascoe will once again be displaying his collection of clocks at the Bank of Montreal. Pascoe has a few surprises for this year's display. T he Whitby Brass Band, the County Town Singers and the Whitby Courthouse Theatre are just a few of the entertainers who will be performing at Heritage Day '94. The theme for this year's Heritage Day is 'A Saturday Stroll on Byron Street.' Many of the day's festivities wil be held on Byron Street North, between Elm and Mary streets, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special ceremonies will be taking place on Byron Street at approximately noon on Sept. 10. These will include the cutting of a cake celebrating Whitby's 'Bonniest Baby in the British Empire,' as well as the unveiling of a special painting of the old Whitby post office. The Town Crier, Fred Martin, will also be present for Heritage Day, announcing all of the events taking place during the day. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the 'British Empire's Bonniest Baby' contest of 1924. Whitby is paying tribute to Teddy Rowe, the baby who won the Empire-wide contest with over 60,000 entrants and who made Whitby famous throughout the British Empire. Rowe's sister, Margaret Scott, will be present at the ceremonies on Heritage Day. Other activities taking place on Heritage Day include: children's games from pioneer/Victorian times; magical busker Max T. Oz; a rope-maker from the Pickering Village Museum; woodcarver Paul Ward; various heritage displays by LACAC, as well as displays by the Whitby Archives, Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, Trafalgar Castle School and the Whitby-Oshawa Genealogical Society; antique fire and police vehicles; singing group 'Away We Go with Anme and Mo!'; a display by Child Find's Kid Check. The fine arts of dried flowers, woodcarving, spinning, caning and rug-hooking will also be demonstrated. The folk group, Emerald, will perform at Pearson Lanes from 11 a.m. to 3-p.m. The Horseless Carriagemen will also perform at different locations in the downtown, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For kids, the Cobblestone petting farm will be in the Bell Taxi lot, 109 Dundas St. W., where pony rides will be offered. Big Sisters will hold face painting at the fire hall, and caricature portraits and apples will be provided by the Downtown Business Improvement Area.
