Whitby Fre Proos, Wodnosday, June 8, 1994, Pff 31 OITfUARIS BertGuth rie was Peter Perry award winner A prominent resident of Whitby who was very active in the Masonic Lodge and other communit activities, Bert Guthrie died at bis residence, 3425 Coronation Rd, RR2 Whiltby, on May 25, 1994. A member of the pioneer family which settled in Whitby 151 years ago, he was born at the Guthrie bomestead on Taunton Road, on June 10, 1918, a son of the late William Henry Guthrie and Alice Hannah Westney. A lifelong resident of Whitby, Mr. Guthrie and wife Grace were presented with the Peter Perry Award as Whitby's outstanding citizens in 1992. This was the first time the award was presented to a couple. Mr. Gutbrie was involved in the Masonic lodges of Whitby for 49 years. He joined Composite Lodge No. 30, AF and AM in 1945 and served as master of that lodge in 1956. F'rom 1980 to 1991 he was Composite Lodge's secretary. He was also a charter member of David T. Camipbell Lodge No. 706, AF and AM, when it was founded in 1962, and served as chapiain from 1962 to 1987. Mr. Guthrie served as Ontario district secretary from 1967 to 1968 and grand steward from 1968 to 1969. A 25-year member of tbe Order of the Eastern Star, chapter No. 248, Whitby, he served as the chapter's patron in 1975-76. Mr. Guthrie was a farmner and blacksmith and bis hobby was woodworking. He was a lifelong member of Audley United Church and the Audlgy Community Club. Mr. Gutbrie was tbe first maie lif. member of tbe Whitby General Hospital Auxiliary. H. and bis wife Grace joined tbe auxiliary in 1978 as volunteers and were responsible for the. coffée, cart and visiting patients every Friday. H. only missed about two or three Fridays of volunteer work at the hospital in 16 years. He also visited residents of Fairview Lodge regularly and along witb bis wife, was active in the. Whitby Rotary Club's Lifeline program. Mr. Guthrie was an active member of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the Ontario Plowrnen's Association, the Beef Producers Association and the Pickering Museum Village, and held many offices in these organizations. Bert and Grace Gutbrie canvassed for the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Red Cross. Mr. Guthrie managed a number of the Heart and Stroke campaigne for Whitby. On Aug. 16, 1941, Mr. Guthrie was married to the former Mary He 18 also survived by onelson, Harold, and bis wife Mary Lynn; two daughters, Eileen (and lier husband Leonard Walthani) and Anne (and ber husband Terry Robinson); six grandchildren, Len Waltham (and bis wife Karen), David Waltham (and bis wife Catherine), Debbie Walthani, Jean and Scott Robinson and Teresa Gutbrie; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel and Kristyn. He is also survived by one brother, Williamn Gutbrie (and bis wife Jackie). Mr. Gutbrie was at tbe W.C. Town Funeral Chapel, Whitby, wbere Phylis Spencer conducted the funeral service on May 30, 1994, followed by interment in Grovesiýde Cemeteiy, Whitby. A Masonic service was held at the funeral chapel on the evening of May 28. If desired, contributions to tbe Heart and Stroke F'oundation would be appreciated. Grace Batty, who survives hlm, at her home north of Brooklin. DOROTHEA TREEN Dorothea M. Treen of 526 Euclid St., Whitby died on Sun- day, Ma y 29, 1994 at Whitby General Hospital. She was 79. She was born on Feb. 17, 1915 in Dartford, Ont., daughter of Daniel Gordon and Violet Daisy (Perrett) Richardson. She married Elrner Nathan Treen on Aug. 9, 1941 in Whitby. A Whitby resident for 47 vearsj she was a member of the Jniteâ Church of Canada. Sheissur.vd b îdaughters Patricia, Vivian, Dan n June, sons James, Garnet and Norman, 20 grandchldre and 10 great-grandchildren. 8h. was predeceased hy her husband and brothers Gordon, Stuart and Garnet.
