Whitby Free Preas, Wednesday, May 11, 1994, Page 13 J'ici,.mupraRelaysUbotRTriu s s anïn By Mike Kowalski Ontario government bureau- crats have been accused of need- lessly delaying the operiing of Whîtby harbour's new boat Iaunch. Councillors Marcel Brunelle and Dennis Fox took turns Mon- day criticizing the Ministry of Environment and Energy for pre- vetngWhitby residentsfrn using the Gordon Street facility. They demanded to know if the ministry, which had concerns about possibly contaminated material on the site upon which the launch is built, will permit the launch to be used this suni- mer -- one year after it was scheduled to be in operation. But other than to state that he is in regulary contact with the ministr, aor Tom Edwards eould not indicate when an answer will be forthcoming. "There's absolutely no valid reason why we couldn't use that facility over the past year,» replied an angry Fox. Blaming the delay on a "«screw- up onl paper,» Fox said it was tme for t he ministry te, "get off its duf and show some concern for the Town of Whitby.» , Brunelle noted that Environ- ment Minister Bud Wildman was minister of natural resources when Whitby received $15,000 froni the province te, help pay for the $441 000 proect. Now *ildxnan heads up the ministry that is preventing area residents fromn using the launch, Brunelle said. «Perhaps lhe should have a meeting with himself,» Brunelle As BIrunelle explained to repor- ters later, the boat launch was constructed on mnaterial which had been dredged out of the harbour and used to build up the banks of the new docks. But the îninistry declared the area to be a landfill site and ordered drains installed to pre- vent leachates (water runofi) from re-entering the lake, Brunelle said. Council agreed, however, the ministry bas yet to give its final e were romised last fal that they wou d clear the matter and have it ready for this year," said Brunelle. «Fishing. season starts in June and we stilI don't know.» Brunelle said people can use the ramp on Brock Street, but it is too small and boaters must watch out for traffic. Brunelle said Whitby has corn- plied with the- ministry's requests, yet approval is not forthcoming. "If we were doing anything to endanger the environnient I would object, but we aren't,» he said. "Every time we ask we're told there's one more thing that has to be done and that it's (appro- val) coming soon.» Brunelle said he suggested at one point that Whitb open the launch on its own, but the Town received legal advice to the con- trany. "We were advised by the legal counsel not to do it because the ministry could hold us up,» he said. Brunelle said the matter had not beeri raised in a public forum before now because "we wanted to be good boys and play it fair." Now he hopes that public awareness may make the minis- try move faster. Brunelle added that Durham Centre MPP Drummond White was to have asked Wildnian about the delay in the legisiature on Monday. Three bicycles valued at almnost $4,000 were stolen from a storage shed at a Renfield Ores- cent residence over the weekend. Police say the cuiprits foroed a door to get into the shed, some- time between 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. The bikes taken were a Moun- tain Wheeler model 7000 men's 12--speed, which has a blue frame and black seat and is valued at $1,300; a Pugeau rac- ing bike worth $400; a red and black Maxam 21-speed mountain bike valued at $2, 100.
