It's spring. rm trying to get myseif reoriented to the great outdoors. For the past six months, xny exercise bas been lixited (by choie, flot neoessity) to a few trips down the schools hailways and back -- always hugging the radiators or taking brief respites in the occasional sunbeain. But, itIs spring. That time of year when people seem to think rd be happier outside than in, and they keep picking me up and dropping me unceremornously on the front lawn where I gingerly test the diminishing permafrost with my paws. Actually, Trafagar Castie is rather lovely in the spring, and, from a distance, 1 enjoy ail the activity that seems to erupt with great enthusiasm at this time of year. I have to lurk behind trees and benches, though, to avoid forehand smashes by members of the tennis team and looping fly halls that corne off the bat of softball players on the school's diamond. Chioe, the principal's dog is out looking for gophers. I arn, of course, above sucb frivolity, but Chloe is stili a pup and can be forgiven. Trafalgar Castle's open bouse is on Saturday, April 23 and I bave the weighty responsibility (no pun intended) of baving to lie decorously on a carpet hère, or stretch out in a sunbeam there, in my role in attracting interested new students to the Trafalgar community. I like to think I have played a major part in helping ta create the friendly atmosphere of the achool over the years, but those in autbority would argue that it is tbe girls themselves that make The Durhamn Multiple Scierosis Society i8 seeking volunteers ta serve on various committees, such as the Carnation Campaign, and fundraising. If you are interested or need more information, cali the aociety at 579-7727. the achool so enduringly arnicable. SOiI, I do ýmy best. I like open bouse day. It ia good for the echool ta, enrol a range of new students from around the Durbam area because every year, new girls add energy, ideas and diversity inta both our academic and extra-curricular activities. The open bouse la from 10:30 a.m. ta 12:30 p.m. and there will be lots of students and a number of teachers available ta answer questions and show people around. You sbould corne. Theyre planning something new: a panel discussion with representatives from various elements of the school community -- a prefeet, a boerder, a teacher, the principal, etc. who will answer all your questions. And if you want ta know what the food is like, Ilil positi on myself on the edge of the stage, and Ilil be happy ta tell you ail about it. When you arrive at our open bouse, look for me, and Fil look forward ta, seeing you there. Now that our mid-termi tests are over, and the marks are in, the staff and students of Henry Street Hligh School cari breathe a little easier. But dondt relax too much because it's regular classes from now on. It seemas as tbough spring bas finally arrived and witb it a number of HSHS sports clubs and teams have begun practices for a season of play and bard work. The girlsd and boys' rugby teame are practising constantly and predict a great season. Lacrosse 18 also underway for both girls and boys, with the same outlook for the season. Gaines in both sports will soon be starting so be sure ta corne out and cheer for the Hawks. Baseball, gi*rls' fastbail and cycling are three other spring sports at Henry. Track and field bas also started, so everyone sbould be listening to announce- ments for practice times and dates. The bistary department will be hoeting a trip to Washington D.C. next week. About 25 students will be sightseeing (and shoping nm sure) for five <laya. They bave on Sunday, April 17 and return April 21. Also on April 17 is tbeMS walk-a-thon. Quite a number of students from Henry are involved. Way ta go, Hawks. Student council is busy planning our last dlance, scbeduled for April 29. Tickets will be on sale during that week. Also in 'the planning stàges are the prom and Grad Week. The activities planned for Grad Week include the ever popular dunk tank (will Mr. Grant volunteer for this, or will we bave to use force?) a game of Family Feud, football field campout, and many other exciting events. Many universities are visiting Henry within the next few weeks ta talk to their applicants about the transition from higli school ta university. Please see tbe *udance department ta ign up for these seimnars. Musicfest is on its way and the Henry Streeet band is expected to perform wonderfully as they are practising liard under the conducting of Mr. Hodgins. Good luck toalal band members. English and law studenta were fortunate enough ta go and see Schindler's List on Tuesday. The group was touched and educated by the portrayal of the Holocaust. It is a movie ta be remembered. Any Grade 10 students who still aren't quite sure whaVtbey're dbing for the summer are invited ta attend a summer opportunities worksbop. Ssee the guidance department rçgarding the date. Grade Il1 students' can visit Mr. DeBlcks in guidance, to&a mke arrangements ta use Discover, a great career exploration computer prograin. Until next time, Hawks, remember ta attend ail classes despite the good weather, and bave a great week.
