But how do you convince people to quit? And how do you reach « at risk' groups in the population and promote their participation in screening programs? As new findings from this important field of research become available, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers will adapt their programs to more effectively motivate people to change their behaviours and adopt healthier lifestyles. Disability and death from cancer can be markedly reduced through early detection. Although people have been encouraged te recognize early warning signs and selek medical attention promptly for many years, both the public and the medical community are recognizing the importance of systematic screening (for people without symptoms) for those cancers where it can be shown that this is effective. Current evidence shows there are two cancers -- cervical -and breast -- for which the use of early detection techniques can lead te a significant decrease in deaths. 7%e Pap test has been instrumental in drain atically decreasing the death rate froin cervical cancer. With a more comprehensive program, it should be possible to completely eliminate this disease r251H ANNIVERSARY Proud ly Serving Whitby rr l 25 Years i 300 GORDON STREET WHITBY - 668-6831 as a cause of premature death in Canada. There is clear evidence showing that the death rate from breast cancer froîn women aged 50 or more decreases if woznen paricipate in scee=n programs that provide carf lcinical breast exaxinations and main- mography every two years. New approïahes to screening for other common cancers such as colorectal cancer and prostate cancer are being evaluated. A method of reducing the burden of cancer is te treat the cancer more effectively and thereby prevent some of the disability and suffering associated with the disease. Much research has been focused on this aspect of cancer control. Newer treatments often have fewer symptoms and side effects and can be provided over a shorter time fraine on an outpatient basis. This allows patients te remain with fanuly and friends and maintain their normal activities te a greater degree. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is currently 73 per cent (based on cases diagnosed between 1980 and 1984), up from 70 per cent for cases diagnosedbetween 1970 and 1974. Improvements in survival rates hve also been reported for melanoma, leukemia, lymo- phoma, brain and prostate cancer. More recently, research in the areas of réhabilitation, pain control, supportive and palliative care have identified other important ways of reducing the impat of cancer. Improvements flowig from this research have also greatly enhanced the qualit of life of those peple living with cancer, as well as Provding needed support to friends and families.
