Wednesday, December 1, 1993 The Whitby major novice AA hockey club competod in the 1Oth annual Stoney Creek Tournament of Champions last weekend, returning Sunday night with the title of tournanient champions. The Rat Pack's first gaine was againat the host Stoney Creek Bruina. The gaine was fast-paced and exciting, with Bruins opening the scoring late n the first period. Whitby came back strong, with Sean Kerr notching the tying goal with assista from Jason Connor and Michael Finigan. Early in the second, Stoney Croek took the lead agenti only to have Kevin Walsh tie t up ofl a nce set-up from Justin Hawe and Sean Pitcher. The Rat Pack thon turned up the tempo and before the second period had ended, Whitby opened up a 5-2 lead with three quîck goals from Andrew Lamniot, Connor and Millage. In the third perod,' the Rat Pack defence to over, allowing Bruina only two shots on goal. The Pack skatod te, a 7-2 victoiy with third period goals from Sean Pitcher and Lamiot, with assista ftrm Hawe, Walsh, Fowler and Branch. The next gaine of the tournarnont had Whitby play the fast-skating Jaguars from Richmond H-ili on Saturday morming. Whitby goal-scorers were Pitcher and Branch, with assista fron Walsh, Robert Eberle and Fowler. Whitby goaltander Drew Dockrill carne up big throughout the gaine especially late in the third and the score ended 2-2, allowing the Rat Pack te advance te, the semi-finals on Sunday thanka te, their better 'plus-minus' rating. The semi-final gaine saw the Rat Peck face off against Grimsby. Whitby opened the acoring late in the firat period when Hawe finished off a nice three-way passng play froin Piteher and BmbIe. Grimsby tied the score early in the second on a screened shot from the lot. Brian Scott of Whitby is a member of the Ontario under-17 teain that will compote at the upconngWorld Hockey Chal- lenge in Anos, Que. Scott, who playa forward for the Kinstn ontenacs in the Ontario junior A league, was named to the teain last week. Ontario plays Team Sweden Dec. 29 ini the frst game of the 10-teaninchallenge. Grimsby put heavy pressure on the Whitby teain in the last few minutes, bUt the third period onded with the score tied 2-2. The teurnainets method of deciding the winner of a playoff gaine was called 'simultaneous shootout.' Grunsby's player elected te move in close and fire a shot up under the crosabar but Nova wns Up te the challenge, staying on his foot and taking the liard shot off his catching glove. While that was happening at one end of the rink, Branch, Whitby's top marksmnn, was making his bid te score on Grinisby. Branch put two spectacular moves on the Grimsby goaltender and deftly tucked the disc into the open corner. In a mattor of only a fe,.N seconds, one save and one goal propelled the Rat Pack inte the tournainent final Sunday afternooh. Richmnond Hill had also qualified te play in the final. Whitby coach Joe Millage's strategy in the final was te explode out of the gate, get some quick shots on goal and take the early lead. The strategy worked. Eleven seconds inte the game Walsh stepped in between two Jaguar defenders and deposited a low shot into the corner. Fifteen seconds Inter, Hawe took a pass from Millage, ateppad around hia iman and scored hgh te the glove side. Starting the play was Eberle. As expected, Richmond ili came beck strong and prevented the Rat Peck from widening the lead. Jaguars administored pressure of their own late in the period, scoring once and the firat period ended with Whitby holding a 2-1lead. Richmnond MiI tied the score rnidway through the second after a series of great scoring chances by both teans. The goal against served te fire up the Rat Pack, and they methodically put the puck in the Jaguar net thre turnes in three minutes on excellent pnssing combinations. Scoring for Whitby were Larniot, Brnnch and Fowler. Whitby scored five timnes in the final period and skated to a very decisive 10-5 victory te dlaim the tournament of champions crown, along with the chaxnpionship banner and silver rings for the players. The Whitby teai, sponsored by the Malta Falcens Soccer Club of Oshawa, has looked very impressive in the early going, scorîng a total of 38 goals in the five victeries, while allowing only il goals. Falcons opened the senson with a 6-0 win over Unionville-Markhaxn Radhawks. The side followed that with wins of 11-3 over Olympic Plame, 5-2 over East York Kickers and a 9-5 victery over North Scarborough Crystals. Most rocently, Whitby had a 7-1 win over Scarborough Blues Lions. It has boon a solid tai effort for Falcona, receiving very strong bnckfield play froni goalkeeper Neil Hubley, earning one shuteut, and defenders Carey Kiender, Nick Kolobutin, Derek Orr and Adain Teather. Lindsay won an avent in the aged 13-14 girls' division, while Sarah Le won an event in the ae 11-12 girls' division.
