Merh anJtssek meeting with Town coundil BybMke Kowalsi A group of downtewn Whitby merchants opposed te pýLying a special tax levy on their buainesses wants te meet with Tewn ceuncil. The group has asked te appear at a future meeting of ceuncil's eperati onscmmittee te present them with the resuite of a peti- tien circulated amnong downtewn businesses. The petitien dernands that for a two-year peri ceuncil refrain from charingth assessment levied against businasses located i the Dewntewn Business In- provement Area (,DBIA). Gene Peacock, one of the organizers of the petition cam- pagn, said the group has recei- ved a "tremendous" response from the DBIAs approximately 400 members. A few businesses have yet te be heard from, but the vast majority support the eall for a moratorium on the DBIA assess- ment, Peaceck said. Although the petition states that the moratorium will be fer a twe-year period, it dees stipulate that a two-thirds majeit"vW ee ail businesses in thieDB must be obtsined before the tai can be re-introduced. Peaicock and ethers have cern- plained for years that the 15- year-old DBLA has outlived it usefuiness and become tee, expensive te maintamn. This ea?~ DBIA budget was $1655,974, which was il per cent lese than the 1992 budget, but cn idealy more than the ori- ginal $10,000 budget in 1978.
