The George GlIcrest House 306 Gilbert Street West WHITBY, Ontario REASONS FOR DESIGNATION 0F 306 GILBERT STREET WEST, WHITBY HIGBOR George Gilcrest built the home at 306 Gilbert Street during the par of 1876. The 20-ft. X 20-ft. home has had numerous occupants since ts construction, most notably the Emmett and Oke familles. ln addition, from 1950 to 1959 it was rented by the Whitby detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. The OP puýt in an oil furnace (1950), constructed a garage (1952) and an addiMon to the rear of the home in 1953. Over the years of the home transfemrng ownership, the home has undergone some restoration and renovations. A replica side porch was adcled in 1988. During the construction of the porch, the date 1843 was incorporated into th e barge board under the front eaves, however, evidence clearly indicates the construction o! the home to be 1876. ARCHITECTURAL The home displays a good representation of modest housing for the period around 1876. The basic storey and a haif, rough cast form, with its gable end to the street, was popular for inexpensive housing for severai decades. With the plain roughcast surface, it relied on the placement o! openings to define its proportions, and is enlivened by slightly pedimented lintels on the front bays. Restoration has added the verandah, barge board, bracketed door hood and door surrounds. The house also has important streetscape value by contributing to a row of later gabled fronted houses.
