page 18, Whitby Free Press, Wednosday, September 22,1993 il What 's new from General Motors for '94 FROM PAGE 16 range je General Motors. So with this in mind I thought I might like te go over what's new and what's not changed. Buick: There je not much new in the Buick camp this year. Most of the models are carryo- vers froin last year, with im- provements where needed. These include more driver's side air bags, improvements to the 3.1- litre V6 and a new electronically- controlled, four-speed autematic transmission in some models. The big Roadinaster gets a 5.7-litre (350 cu. in.) added as an engine option, for those who want more power. This should make the car a much more effi- cient towing vehicle. Cadilac: Big news from this division . s the introduction of the De Ville Concours (pronounced "con-coor") and De Ville sedan. This new and big Caddy will be front-wheel.drive and will offer Cadillac's new powerful North- star V8. This double-overhead cern engine delivers 270 horse- power and is the saine engine used in the Eldorado and Seville last year. You cen say goodbye to the Coupe de Ville due to a lack of interest. Chevrolet Most of you xnay now know that thp Camaro je al new for the 1994' model year. I1his car has been ini big demand since its introduction ini early spring. The basic front-engine, rear-drive configuration stays, with the car. Base engine je a V6 while the Z28 gets the Corvette's 5.7 V8 with 275 hp. Both a base and Z28 convertible will be fac- tory-made unlike the past few years. The Caprice for 1994 will get a 5.7-litre V8 as an option. this again should please the people who felt the car was a little underpowered. A new instru- ment panel je also new in the Caprice. The GTZ and GT naines on the Beretta have been dropped in favour of Z26 naine (not real original). Other than that, there is no real chargeff. The Lumina Van, ges a nose job for the new year. The "Duet Buste?" look je gone ini favour of a slightly more conventional look. Geo: No real changes here, juet some more new colours. Oldamobile: Like the Geo, no real changes of note here. Pontiac: iàke its sieter, the Camaro, the Firebird ie ail new for the 1994i model year. Since ail the major components are the sanie as the Camaro, I need not say more. One difference in the Firebird line 'is that a Formnula 400 model gets the Trans-Am's 5.7-litre V8 but with a slightly plainer interi*. SAAB: An ell new 900 series hits the road for 1994. Like Saabs of old kt has 'a rounded look. The ignition key ie etili on the flood bçtveen the seats. A new 2.5 V6 fçom GMWO Opel je new availablet hie year. This V6 produces 170 horsepower, 10 more than last year's Turbo four- cylinder. The older style 900 convertible will still be with us for at least the 1994 model year. A new, more powerful two-litre, four- cylinder turbo will be offered with 185 horsepower. The 9000 SAAB gets a more powerful turbo four-cylinder, Up, 25 horse te 225 horsepower this year. Other than that ail else is the saine. Saturuz This winner for GM goes basically unchanged for the new year. Light trucks: The full-sized trucks of GMC and Chevy are basically the saine for the new year. But the AS-10 and Sonoma (GMC) are new in bodies and interiors. I, think these new trucks are great looking. The freine and engines are ail the sanie as last year. Extended cabs will still be offered for the new year. The S-10 Blazer and Jimmy are carryovers for thie year. They will most likely get their makeover next year. Most of the GM vehicles for 1994 will ahnost ail have environmentally friendly air-con- ditioning for the year. By Glen R[onorowski Travelling any great distances in your car during the summer menthe (or for that matter any tume of the year) can be a painful experience for those with back problems. Though seating in tuday's cars je btter than ever bofore, even those without backproblems find itting in some cars unconifor- table. A cempany doing something about the stress placed on the back by ill-fitting seats je Obus Ferme of Toronte. They build a form-f»itting unit that goes bet- ween your back and the seat. The erthopedically-designedback rest keeps yeur spine in align- - ment and thus helpe eliminate the stress on yeur back causing pain. To try eut the Obus, I used the car that almost always gives me back problems, the BMW. These great carsjuet don t agree with My back. Nomatter what I do, I always get a pain in my lower back. The trip I planned was te Windsor, to visit friends, 750 miles return from my home in Whitby. I started the trip with- out the Obus, and got about two heurs into the trip and had to lot mny wife do the rest of the driv- ing. On the way back, I attached the Obus Forme on the back of the seat and started off. Effort- lessly I made it home with net the slightest discomfort te my back whatsoever. I found that I had to readjust the driver's seat to get a coinfor- table driving position -- the Obus moves the driver slightly for- ward. The construction of the Obus Forme is simple. A strong, light- weight, plastic, form-fitting board is sandwiched between foami rubber and a durable syn- thetic cloth cever. Its light weight makes it easy te meve frem one vehicle te another or into the house. Obus users I talked to generally can't live without them. One heavy user mentioned that overuse does wear eut the material. In winter, a cever with a heating pad can bo purchased for the Obus. The heated cover fits into the lighter plug and in a few minutes your back je teasty. I actually had te turn it off after about 10 minutes, as I get to comfortable. The highback version of the Obus I tested selle for about $100 and the heated cever for $50. FREE...
