Whitby Free Pres, WeôiedaY. Augusi 18. 1993. Page 7 ............................................................................................................................................... :5: ~. 5:: 55 iï«e Fish and trees For the past week I have been on vacation. By the time you read this, I won't be. In the process, I have learned a number of -things. Some are worth sharing. First (and this is not original, but true) some advice: neyer travel any distance in a closed car with any individual who has just learned to whistle. Don't ask. Second: residents of Price Edward Island have distinct opinions about things. A 'fixed link' means either a bridge or a tunnel -- to replace ferry service which is now the only method of getting a car to potato island. The federal government has promised ... aw, forget it. It's only tax money. Anyway, isianders support the link (a bridge) or don't, ail for their own reasons. A sure way of striking up a conversation is to say, 1I see the courts have approved the link." Then stand back. There is lots to do on P.E.I. Like capture dead clam shelîs. Collect rocks on the beach. Taine a pet jellyfish. Or go deep sea fishing. Which brings to mind a little ditty composed by a four-year-old niece while deep sea fishing for cod one bright morn- ing. Song (to the tune of something nursery- schoolish): "Oh, we fltshed and we fished and we fished, And we sat and fished and [i"shed. And we fished and we sat And we [ished and we sat And we sat anid sat and fished." You get the idea. We also spent several days at a relative's cottage. There are lots of things to see at a cottage. Like trees and trees and trees and trees and trees and trees, trees,.trees, trees. (Okay, vacation has made me a little punchy.) Incidentally, one of the difficulties (or advan- tages) of vacations lies in a simple observation: news stops happening. We drive home through Quebec. As far as we know, Canada has declared war on the U.S. over NAFTA. Or Quebec has declared war on Ontario. Or ... Yeah, I know. That's worse than trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, trees and more trees. Other pieces of information too trivial to share: hello to the Whitby resident (I missed the name) who works at Oshawa Public Library and whose father, Mike, lives on P.E.I. and runs lO-kilometre road races, like one on Brackley Beach. Hello, hello. What else can we share? In parting, a few bits of vacation I would as soon forget. T-shirts at $23.99. Thunderstorms. The smell of Edmunston, N.B. And a gift- wrapped nothing for kindred spirits selling for $5.50 (1 guess the thought counts). Mny, many other memories are worth keep- WIIITy pOST OFFICE, C. 1920 This stone post office stood ut Brock and Dundas streets, where the Bank of Montreal is now, from 1910 to 1959.
