He was 54. Ho lived until recently at 402 Palace St., Whitby and was a resident of Bestview Nursing Home, Markbam for the past few months. A son of the late James Smith and Alice Hannah Gibson, he was born at Whitby on Sept. 18, 1898. Mr. Smith was a member of the Charlie Chaplin's hockey tenm of the Whitby Town League in 1920, and was active in local sports. In the early 1920s, he mroved te the Windsor-Detroit area wbere ho worked as a sales clerk until hoe retired in 1957 and returned te Whitby. Keenly interested in local history, Mr. Smith served as curater of the Whitby i-storical Society's museum at Lynde House from 1972 te 1978. He Fnd bis wife were life members of the Whitby HI-storical Society. Mr. Smith was married te the former Margaret Muriel (Tody) Walters of Whitby at Windsor, Ont. on Nov. 22, 1924. Mrs. Smith died on May 31, 1982. Ho is survived by two sons, Dr. Donald H. Smith and bis wife Kris of Steuffville and Robert R. At 7:15 p.m., a lone maie suspect entered the Bank of Montreal located on the east side of the Oshawa Shoppinq Centre. The suspect approached the teller's booth an banded the victim a wrinkled, white piece of paper and then announced that it was a hold-up. The robber demanded the money from under the coin tray and also demanded the hold-up note before running from the batik. A bank employee saw the suspect get into a 1991 or newer-style GMC/Chev pickup truck with a dark blue top, light blue middle dark blue bottom with an eight-foot box with a four-inch Ly four-inch logo. The truck was last seen gon outhbound through the lot towards Elmgrove Avenue. Thiesuspect is described as male, white, aged 25, 6-ft., 190 lbs., witb a heavy build and short black hair. He wore silver-rimmed glasses, a black baseball bat, black leather jacket, faded blue jeans and black footwear. No weapon was seen or mentioned.
