A1t Ex po the group met the Mayor of the town of Longueuil, Quebec, Marcel Hobidas. Rtobidas suggested that resi- dents of both cominunities con- sider twinning the townsp because, at the time, both towns had mny similar characteris- tics. Town council niembers froni Whitby went to Longueuil to see if Robidas was serious about his proposai. It didn't take them long to figure out that he was. So, the exehanges began. SThe 1993 exchange, the 25th year of the will be held in Whitby June 18 to 20, with many events scheduied. When exchan ges first began, residents from iWhitby would go te Longueuil, and Longueil resi- dents would visit Whitby in the saine year but that proved te be too diflicuft. Now the visits take place once a year. Participation in eveflts is open te ail Whitby residents. Longueil residents will visit local sights, and there will be receptions held for the v'sitors. He says that the main purpose of the trip is te get te know a French -speaking com munity, and te strengthen national ties.
