Recommended to council Consortium boss gets lifetime trading ban" By M.fike Kowalski The former head of a Whitby company wlich swindled mil- lions o fdollars has received a lifetime trading ban from the Ontario Securities Commission. The commission recentl. im- posed the ban on Pia WilliEmson for ber role as head of th-3 now bankrupt Consortium Group of Copnies. Williamson, 36, who is cur- rently in a Lo)ndon, England jail awaiting extradition to Canada, founded Consortium with her late husband Lachlan William- son in 1990. According to the three-member OSC panel which dotermined lier fate, illiamson's "actions were reprehensible," especially in light of the fact that she continued collecting money after being ordered to stop. "As a result of her intentional raising of funds in the face of regulatory prohibitions, she exposed still more investors to furtber losses," the panel's ruling States. In order to proteet the public from the risk of any possible repetition of bier actions, "she should neyer again be allowed to trade in securities in Ontario," the ruling adds. Earlier this year 21 former Consortium Group sales repre- sentatives were banned lrom trading for up to two years. OSC lawyers said investors court on how Consortium 's will be fortunate to get back 10 cents on each dollar invosted. Peat Marwick Thorne, the court-appointed receiver, bas made its presentation to the Williamson did tiot appear for that hearing which was held before the commission in Janu- ary. She had evaded authorities since prior to her conviction last June for illegally selling securi- ties. Williamson, who neyer appeared for that Ontario court trial, was fined $350,000 and sentenced to 21 months in jail. Her OSC hearing was adjour- ned to March 3 to allow the RCMP time to extradite her from Florida whiere she was last known to be living. But the same week as her hearing was scheduled to resume, Williamson was arrested in London. Canadian legal olliciais told The Fi-ce Press on Monday that Williamson's extradition is pro- ceeding, but they could not in- dicate when the matter wilI be resolved. Upon her return to Canada, Williamson will have a bail hear- ing and a date will be set for a preliminary hearing on other outstanding charges against ber. RCMP have charged William- son with four counts of fraud, theft over $1,000 and crinîinal breach of trust. Evidence from ber OSC hear- ing stated that Consortium in- vestors were not paid off with money from the real estate tran- sactions but from new people investing money in the com pany. Williamson herseîf took almost $2 million for ber personal use during the 21 months prior to the company being placod in receivership.
