The Oshawa Blue Knights, in conjunction with the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association, entered teams in the peewee (aged 12 and under), bantain (aged 14 and under) and midget (aged 16 and under) divisions. 5 team jr. field lacrosse By Cheryl-Ann MacKean "Field lacrosse is becoming ve7 popular and it's time to try buMdup the league,» says Deug Ford, one of two coordina- tors for the recently formed Whitby Junior Lacrosse League. The league, formerly the Whitby Intermediate Lacrosse League, changed because there were kids in high school who could play lacrosse and we didn't know about it because they thought that the league was for eider people," explains Ford. The age requiremnent for the league, which is min by the Whitby Miner Lacrosse Associa- tion, is 17 or older. Five house teams have been organized by the committee. We want te attract kids from anywhere in the Durham Region,» adds Ford. Ford, assisted by Wayne McNutt, finished picking the coaches for the house teams dur- ing the last week of April. "Lacrosse is really picking up in the last few years, because more and more hmgh schools are picking it Up,» says Ford. The Durham midget team defeated Toronto Beaches 8-6, Orangeville (last year's cham- pins) 9-4, Burlington 10-3 and St. Catharines 10-5. The Durham bantam team defeated Toronto Beaches 9-2, tied St. Catharines 9-9, defeated Hamilton 17-4 and Burlingten 18-1. The Durham peewee team beat Hanmilton 13-3, Beaches 12-3, St. Catharines 13-2 and Hamilton 10-5. The tournament was held over two weekends, in St. Catharines and in Oshawa. In exhibition play, the Whitby midget team defeated Burlington 9-7.
