"Many people who usually plant fromn seed say they left it too late this year, discouraged by the long winter. Now they are planning to buy from commercial growers," says Marilyn Gurevsky, a manager with the province's Consumer Services Bureaus. "Also, a lot of consumers are telling us they'd like tips on reducing the cost of their gardens," she adds. Gardening can be a joy as you see the little plants you've tended grow into big bloomers, but can be frustrating if your efforts don't yield much. Before buying a single box of petunias, help protect against loss by planning the gardon best suited to your growing area. Consider the following points: e Where was the snow piled deepest in %vinter? Delicate perennial f lowers and shrubs should not be planted where they'Il be exposed to heavy snowfall. e What is the nature of your soil? An expert can suggest plants well suited to its content. aHow much sunlight do the plants need? In some cases, it is possible te shelter small, delicate flowers fromn too much Sun or wind by placing them next te bigger, stronger varieties.
