The program will bring Whitby youth aged 14 to 17, and the Whitby fire department tegether in a weekly program under the guidance of Scouts Canada. The partnership is intended te) provide good times for the curieus and adveaturous through exposure te varieus aspects of a firefighter's day-to-day work. The basis of the Venturer program offered by Scouts Canada censists of six areas: vocational, service, social and cultural, exploration, persona] fitness and personal interest. These areas provide a framework upon which te explore a possible career in firetighting. "A lot of work has gene inte the erganization of this program since we started te talk with the lire department last fali,' said Dave Smith, vice president cf membership for Whitby District Scouts. "Everything is in place, except the youth members for a very successful 1program." Frelighter Henry Kriowes will nct as an advisor te the Venturer cempany. The meeting hall at ire station #2 on Thickson Road bas also been provided by the lire department for the progr-am. Whitby Distict Scouts is providing two experienced aduit leaders, Alan Wright and Melinda Whalen, both of Whitby. Once the program gets off the ground, the young men and women involved in the company wilI take over the administration and program planning. Except for the emphasis on a frefighting career, the Fire Venturer company is expected to conduct n similar programn to the regular Venturer program. Other Venturer programs in Whitby include weekend camps, bike hikes, canoeing, first aid, touring, winter camping, sports activities and social outings. It is up to each Venturer company what they want to do as a group, as long as it falîs within the guidelines set out by Scouts Canada," said Smith. 'We hope to attract ,15 te 20 youth te the pi'ogram which will start in May." To help explain how the program works, an information session has been scheduled for Thursday, April 29, 7:30 p.m., at the fire hall located on the corner of Thickson and Manning roads.
