March 31,-1993, Page5. - Ste-n-no--e-r-e-c-o Durham MP Ross Stevenson recently announced he wiil stand for re-election as Progressive Conservative candidate in the federal generai election expected later this year. Stevenson said he will again seek the nomination when Durham PCs meet at Blackstock on April 15 te choose their candidate. 'There are quite a considerable number of individuals and groups that I have been able to help personally. As wefl, I believe I've been an effective voice at Ottawa for this community, ensuring the view and concerns of its people are heard and understood. 'These were challenging years, with some extremely difficult decisions being made. Now we're looking ahead te a very exciting future, with dynamic new government leadership tuned te the hopes and needs of al René Soetens, Ontario riding MP, announced March 24 that he will not be seeking the national leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. I1 have spent the last two weeks seriously considering this option and, aithough I maintain that the convention is wide open te ail contenders, I indicated that R EN E SOETENS ROSS STE VENSON Canadians," he said. First eiected MP for Durham at the last federal election in 1988P Stevenson is a former universi ty professor, provincial MPP and was Ontario's Minister of Agriculture in 1985. . graduate of Uxbridge Secondary School, he obtained bachelor and master of science degrees at Guelph University and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He then became professor of crop science at the Ontario Agriculturai Colege in Guelph. From 1981 to 1987, he represented Durham-York in the Ontario legisiature. He also has several years experience as a business consultant specializing in environmiental, agricultural and economic issues. Stevenson has deep roots in the Durham area, where his family began farming six generations ago. He owns and operates a 350-acre family farm north of Uxbridge, raising field crops and beef cattle. He and his wife Elainie have three children. The nomination meeting wil be held at Blackstock community centre. Registration opens at 6 p.m. and the meeting gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Doug Lewis, Solicitor General of Canada. Durham federal constituency includes the part of the city of Oshawa north of Rossland Road, the part of the town of Whitby north of Taunton Road and ail of the town of Newcastle, Scugog and Uxbrîdge townships. Those wishing to participate in choosing the candidate mu.st reside within Durhamn constituency and must have a 1993 membership in the Durham PC Association that was purchased prior te 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 8. "Although we did raise a significant amount, we did fali short of the $500,000 that I feit would be a minimum require- ment. Soetens decided that it would be unreasonable te start eut on a campaign and use donors' money, knewing that it wouid be unlikely that he could finish the campaign. I- would like te thank the constituents of Ontario riding who encouraged me and offered their support for my candidacy. I can assure them that I will continue te serve them te the best of my ability," continued Seetens.
